If the nVidia display adapter is an add-in card, I'd say that was the faulty part, if it's built-in to the motherboard, it may be the system RAM that's at fault.

Can you open it up and check?

I thought it was the video card too,so I removed the video card, cleaned the dust from the built in fan and reinstalled...it still does the same thing.
So,yes it is a removable card.
I guess this means the video card is fried?

Definitely, if there is another VGA or DVI port on the back of your computer, attached to the motherboard, pull out your Add-in card and see if it works with the monitor in the Onboard Graphics on the Motherboard then.

Ummm, now you lost me,I think you're trying to tell me to use another slot like the video card slot...I seem to only have 1.unless I can use the soundcard slot?
can I pull the soundcard and try the vid card there?

No, that particular Dell model doesn't have any onboard graphics, PCI-E graphics cards are pretty cheap though ;)

So satrow,Is my vid card fried?Do you believe this is my problem?
And if so,can I upgrade my card if I'm getting a new one,I'd like to remain with Geforce.

My guess is that the card is fried, yes. PCI-E cards by nVidia should be available from about $40 or so. Don't opt for the more powerful cards that require a separate power input that your Dell may not be able to provide

well I was looking at the geforce 8400 gs but it says 64 bit memory interface-mine says 256 bit-are they compatible?
And I have already replaced my power supply for a 600w model.

The 64/256-bit referenced are internal to the card, higher is better but it won't stop the card working as it should.

Hello oh gurus of the pc world.....
Ok,I picked up the Asus EN8400GS Silent graphic card..for 50$ at Microbytes.
I installed it,didn't even have to use the driver cd included with the card,it updated itself!amazing.
I was up and running in under 5 mins.
    All I can say is,WOW.what a marked improvement,seriously.
No more issues whatsoever and I dare say my pc is running faster, and when they say silent,it really is.

    Thanks for the help :)
