I dont know whats wrong...it just all of a sudden stopped working. When i go to volume control and open it up all i see is Wave, SW Synth, and CD Player. And, usually there are a few more different types of volumes that i can move up and down. I checked to see if Plug and Play was on and it was and also tried to check to see if i could fix it by going to the properties of volume control but couldnt fix it.

    Thanks in advance

Hi! Under your volume control click on options. Make sure your volume control is check marked. Under device manager is there an exclamation point next to your audio device? If not, make sure that your speakers are plugged in correctly. Did you make any changes to the system before the problem started?

You looked at Volume Control->Options->Properties. Was there no "Checkbox" list for you to peruse? It should be just below
    Show the following volume controls:
    [x] Volume Control
    [x] Wave
    [x] SW Synth
    [ ] Front
    [ ] Rear
    [ ] Center
    [ ] Subwoofer
    [x] CD Player
    [x] Microphone
    [ ] Aux
    [x] Line In
    [ ] Phone
    [ ] Mono Out
    [x] PC Beep

You didn't say if you checked Device Manager . Do you have/have not an exclamation point there?

    Hi palermo214
If you have no "exclamations", hopefully you have the sound card's Driver's Disk. If it's onboard sound, then it will be part of the Chipset Drivers. I'd download new ones, if they're available. But before installing any new drivers, go to:
Device Manager->Sound, video and game controllers.
-expand the list. You should be able to see the name of your audio card/device. Select it and delete it. Since this is a quirky hardware related failure, I recommend exiting from Device Manager and doing a restart. This will let Windows do a purge of the old driver, and give it the opportunity to "find new hardware". If you've got an "old style" driver disk (with INF files) then you can respond to the Windows New Hardware dialog. Most likely, you've got an Install/Setup type driver. In that case cancel the dialog and then run the installer. It's not a very creative, solution, but I hope it helps :)

I took it to best buy and the guy said he thought it was spyware and it would cost me 75 bucks for him to clear it of spyware...but i have spybot and norton...and ive downloaded and run a few other spyware removing programs just to be safe and have not found anything

    Do not waste your money.
Whatever the issue is, it's definitely not spyware. We are having the EXACT same issue on a puter we are working on here.
The computer was reformatted last night to no avail.
Many different antivirus and spyware removal programs have been checked, registry repairs, etc.
The driver has been uninstalled and reinstalled a couple of times - nada.
I was so excited to see a forum that described the same issue - hoping to find some brilliant solution - still hoping ;)
