    Hi guys,
For about a week now, occasionally I will be working and my system will just restart. I'm not running anything new. When it loads back, I get an error that Windows recovered from a serous error. That's why I assume it is a software issue. It has only done this when I'm working on it, I haven't sat down and noticed that it has restarted. I built this system about a year ago (running Windows XP Pro). I would consider myself an advanced user, I take care of my system and keep it optimized. I'm really at a loss about what to do. Is it possible that the problem is with the power supply?

I know that this is pretty vague and I really appreciate any help I can get.

Right click My computer > Properties > Advanced tab> Startup and Recovery settings > under system failure, uncheck auotmatically restart.

Click OK all the way out. The next time you have a fatal system error, there will be a blue screen. There will be information on it, so please post here with exactly what it says, verbatim.

To recover from this blue screen, you will have to restart your computer from your reset, or power button. Keep in mind if its a newer system, you will need to hold down the power button >4 seconds to shut it off.

I already read that, and I'm pretty sure I don't have a virus.

same thing happened with my HP computer and when i read the error report that was prepared by windows to be send to microsoft , it said it is a problem of my built in dial-up modem. i upgraded my modem drivers and the problem was not there.

It just happened again. I jotted down a little bit of the error on my palm pilot:

    Stop: 0x0000008E
    Filtnt.sys

Then something about a physical memory dump.

Obviously, I didn't copy the whole thing. I guess I'll make sure all of my drivers are up to date.

I updated my video drivers which is my suspected culprit. With any luck, I won't have any more problems.

I believe that file belongs to Outpost firewall, so if it happens again, I'd try uninstalling it.

Keep in mind if you use a dll version that is not designed for that version of firewall, then it can cause it to stop working...or worse, appear to work and not be doing anything at all.
