    Hi

I prefer to have everything on a wired router with no wi-fi functionality and no antennae (long story) and then switch to a wi-fi router for some situations. (downloading things on handhelds). But now I think switching from one to the other has somehow screwed up the wired one. All the lights are flashing and it's not connecting. Windows diagnostics says there's no Ethernet cable connected. Both D-link.

Normally what I do is I unplug the power to #1 wired and then plug in the power to #2 wi-fi (it still has wired ports in the back and one antennae). I normally switch ONLY the modem cable into the #2 wi-fi router and leave all the wired connections were they are on the #1 wired modem so everything is the same when I switch back.

This time I got impatient not being able to go online on my wired PC and switched the Ethernet cable going from my main PC from the #1 wired router into the #2 Wi-fi router. Going back to my PC I get a message saying "More than one PC on this network has the same IP address please contact your network admin to resolve..." something like that. But the new connections worked fine.

Then when I switched everything back to the wired router I got the symptoms mentioned above. Not sure why this has happened, or if the IP address conflict would even have any thing to do with it. Would love to hold onto to my wired router.

    Robert.

"More than one PC on this network has the same IP address please contact your network admin to resolve..." I've see that on occasion; it isn't anything to be concerned about. The router gets confused. It kept one IP and issued the same one to another computer. It sorts itself out.

When I make ANY changes to my network, I power down both the router and the modem.
I'd remove the current router then power down the modem. Wait 1 minute then power up the modem. Wait for all the lights on the modem to look correct then plug in whatever router you want to use. You can then start plugging in the wired computers.

Thanks, first thing I did was cycle everything a few times and it didn't work at first...then after posting I left everything unplugged for the day and came back, and of course it works.

I must have been turning it all back on too soon. Doink.
