my wallpaper is eating my icons

tried to be clever and adapt the wallpaper on my desktop, with hilarious consequences....

saved the existing wallpaper, edited it in fireworks, saved as jpeg and selected revised image as wallpaper. when I went back, half my icons were missing. went to desktop in explorer and realised they are still *there*, but not displaying in about two thirds of the screen.

What seems to be happening is that the area defined by the point where I did the editing (about a third of the way down and halfway across the screen from the top left) 'eats' my icons whenever I put them in that area, so only the top left hand corner is useable, and the rest of the screen is an L-shaped black hole.

Have reverted to the original wallpaper, and tried having none, but the problem persists. am running xp, btw

Anyone got any tips? apart from not messing with my wallpaper any more?

    Cheers
