All of the sudden this is happening. Before it was very quick, now it takes at least a minute......

    Any idea why?

Thanks in advance for any help received.

    Hi exoticplantsman :)
    And welcome to major geeks
The main reason why this happens is because the start up part of windows can get overloaded as software writes to the registry
The only software in most cases that should be allowed to run at start up are your anti virus / firewall/ Trojan / Antispyware scanners. All else in most cases that you do not require immediately can be disabled. There are many ways this can be achieved. Firstly you can go to START/ RUN AND TYPE IN MSCONFIG And disable any unneeded software from there or you can use a very good freeware program like WIN PATROL Found here

Which is very effective. If you are unsure of anything then please do post back

What version of the OS do you have, do you have all of the nececary updates installed? Are all your drivers up to date? What devices do you have connected to your PC, and have you added any recently?

    Is "shutdown" affected at all?

I don't think it is anything to do with the startup part of Windows as I am familiar with MSCONFIG and currently only have a few important running programs , i.e. NAV, ADSL modem, Mailwasher, MSGTAG, MSN Messenger, Zone Alarm, WinPatrol, Logitech Quickcam and NVidia.

Logitech Quickcam (webcam) is the most recently installed which was done about a month ago.

OS version is Windows XP with SP2 installed several months ago, and Windows updates are regularly done. I don't use IE6 but prefer to use Firefox.

Devices connected to PC are Zoom usb modem, usb hub/card reader, epson printer, tft monitor, mouse and keyboard, and occasionally videocamera via firewire.

Shutdown is not affected at all. I have timed the two, standby takes 105 secs and shutdown only takes 18 secs.

    Hi exoticplantsman :)
Please note that MSN Messenger,Logitech Quickcam and NVidia. do not need to be loaded at start up unless you are going to be using this software from the off. As they are very resourceful and prone to causing delays of one sort or another. Even your ADSL modem is loaded in the services and unless you wish to see the icon in the tray by the clock that to can be removed

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\NVCPL.DLL - this is the nVidia I was referring to, are you sure that can be removed? I have removed all the others as you suggested but MSN Messenger keeps coming back!

    Hi exoticplantsman :)
Yes it is OK to remove NVCPL.DLL from the start up unless you are in to tweaking the various option's in the playing of games ETC. As for msn just go into options and untick the relevant box in general

    Done.

Now I have tested the standby and it is still the same at 105 secs, shutdown is now 15 secs.

    Perhaps a driver issue?

    Hi exoticplantsman :)
Could very well be. Do make sure that you are using the latest drivers. Especially for your sound and vision. If you have not updated any drivers over the past year chances are they will all need to be updated. Should you need any help then please do post back. For the full system information of everything on your computer then download EVEREST Home Edition found here>>>>

I checked my drivers only a month ago using the evaluation version of DriverGuide Toolkit but the evaluation period has now expired, and there did not seem to be any new driver updates availiable. I have my drivers backed up somewhere....

I have suspicions with my Zoom ADSL usb modem as it does not always connect automatically upon startup meaning sometimes I have to replug the usb connection to get it going again, would that be a driver fault?

I have installed Everest Home edition.

    Hi exoticplantsman :)
Could well be! I would if i were you is to uninstall the adsl driver download a fresh copy and try again. If this fault is still there then your modem is at fault and you may have to get hold of another one to see if it is!

I removed the driver and uninstalled and disconnected the modem. Still slow standby which proves it is nothing to do with the modem.

Thinking back I faintly remember playing with the power management settings around the time the problem started, I wonder if I have messed up....?

Try this and see if it helps but I believe it is a service/process running in the background that is causing it, so I'd close all apps, then open TaskManager and kill all processes except the ones that were 'System' based then try going to standby, if problem occurs again, before doing anything else, try unplugging all USB devices and then try to go on Standby again. ;)
