Got my Earthlink DSL connection running and tested with my desktop running XP. Appears to have a PPPOE type connection, whatever that means.

Bought a Linksys B wireless router and a Linksys B PCI card for my son's desktop. Have connected my desktop into router with an ethernet cable. This connection works fine.

After installing the PCI card into my son's PC (XP OS) and some work, we do see the SDDI name expected for the wireless network. However, from this PC, cannot get web browser or AOL IM to connect. When we open the network connection, we see values (packets?) for 'sent' and zero for 'received'.

Logged onto website to administer the router from my PC and when testing the internet connection, it fails to connect. Am seeing some settings that could be saved that are blank, things like server, domain, etc.

    Any ideas ?

There should be a section in the router's web interface (website you called it) that has a place to enter settings specific to your ISP that will let the router take over the chore of authenticating you to Earthlink (instead of your PC) via PPPoE (Point to Point Protocol over Ethernet-- sort of like dial-up for DSL). In each PC you connect to the router, both by wire or wirelessly, you will need to specify some settings in your Network Connections TCP/IP Properties like the IP address of your default gateway (the router), and an IP address for a DNS server (also your router). Documentation that came with your router, or a setup wizard in some kind of installation software should be able to guide you through the process. Typically this will be something like 192.168.0.1, but various manufacturers may use slightly different defaults.

Thanks for the good tips guys. Feel like I'm really close, but realistically not there yet. DSLREPORTS.com and broadband.com gave me some details.

I can ping my router from son's PC. That's after entering / saving IP address stuff from that PC.

I was able to login from my hardwired PC to the internet without entering ID and password. That's after I re-configured the netopia DSL modem to bridge mode.

Not sure where the hangup is. Have investigated the CD provided documentation from Linksys but it doesn't give a lot of help. Kinda miss the good old days when a 40 pg ref doc would come with hardware, not this 'look it up at our website crap' would come ....

ok i have almost the same problem. when i have my wireless card plugged into my laptop, it works great. when i switch to a wired network card however, i get 0 packets sent / 0 packets received. it is a mystery. i have tried ipconfig commands to no avail. my tci/ip setting are not the problem i think since when i switch back to wireless i have no problems. any suggestions would be a welcome distraction from banging my head on the table in frustration. thank you....ouch

I had same problem going from wireless to lan,,,,,just bridge the connections,,,open network connections and right click on each of the connection items IE wireless and lan card and add to bridge the connections,,this enables the connection to be established,,also make sure in all advanced settings ,,,check the box for windows to configure,,,,Hope this helps , Glenn :) :) :)
