my wireless is up, down, up, down...

    Hi, all.

I had what I think was called the Zbol virus. I'm 100% clean from this, but, ever since, my wireless has been acting weird. I DO NOT KNOW if it's a coincidence or if they're connected.

Basically, I generally have 5 bars, then suddenly it'll drop to 3, the Limited Connectivity triangle will appear, then the blue circle which shows it's reconnecting, then it's back to 5 bars. Once it's back to 5 bars, it'll usually cycle through the above again and again and again -- several times w/in the course of just a minute or two. Eventually it'll reach 5 bars and stay that way for anywhere from 2 minutes to an hour, then it'll spend as many 25 minutes doing the above over and over and over.

Obviously, this makes being on the Internet VERY frustrating.

I'm working in a Win 7 environ, with an old Netgear router, a WGR614 v6 (but, for 2 mos prior to this, they've been compatible), and a Vonage phone router.

I've reinstalled my drivers. I've tried tightening and evening trading out a couple of wires with no improvement. I've also called the cable company to see if it's on their end. And, last night, I clicked the hidden reset button on the router -- that worked and everything was running smoothly but only for about 12 hours.

When I connect the computer directly to the router, this issue still occurs but far less frequently. Which says to me, it's either something on my cable company's end or something on the computer. (Although, today, connecting directly has STOPPED the problem...but this wasn't so just 2 days ago.)

My cable company suggested I try connecting the computer DIRECTLY to the cable modem. That resulted in no connection at all -- just a continuous blue circle until it told me "No connectivity." However, the modem is otherwise working...

    Thoughts?

Have you searched for any software/firmware updates for your Netgear router? I would suspect that could be the culprit

    Jonboy, Thanks!

Turns out it was a combo -- my cable router was several years old. They came out and gave me a new one, and that helped give me better speed and less connectivity issues, but the described problem was still happening...just differently. So it was at that point I searched for a firmware update -- and that resolved it once and for all.

    THANKS for the suggestion tho'!
