It seems the more I learn the less I know.

I want to set up a data base that is fairly detailed and want to start by learning mysql as my server supports php and mysql.

I need to make a double opt in email form, for one part, and I also want to make a survey type "tick" box setup for voting. Also eventually I will want to have an affiliate program.

I google a bit to no avail.

To set up and administer the database what type of software do I need and where can I get it?

I think I'm going to have to sign up at the local campus for courses this fall, and would like to have a good jump start on it.

In summary I just want to start playing with basic simple database features and functions and don't know where to start.

You'll have all the basic database administration features right there to play with, without needing to get dirty learning SQL. However in some cases, its easier to connect to a shell account at the server and administrate through the command line client at the server. For info on how to use that, hit the mysql documentation

I checked that out and it seems a bit advanced for me at this time. I downloaded the myphpadmin2.6.3 and have no idea what to do with it. Maybe this doesn't work on a mac. I didn't see a setup file in any of the folders however, for mac or win. I have my mac partitioned so I can run linux, would that be better?

Or do I need to load on xp machine?

phpmyadmin runs using php (as the name implies). In otherwords you install phpmyadmin as a webpage and you use it via a browser (The OS doesn't matter). You must place it on a website which supports php. Before you do that you should edit the config files to point to the mySQL server though. It's fairly straight forward to do, but if you get stuck it does come with documentation.

Coco--That helps some. If I install it as a webpage, where do I install it? main directory? I'll have to check it out some and come back with more specific questions.

Goldfish--You've been quite patient with me over the years and I appreciate it. Just don't get around to saying that much.

Copy the entire directory to your web space, and edit the config file as the README tell you, putting your username and password for your mysql server.

Of course, this is assuming that your server is running PHP :)

Turns out that I have a phpmyadmin on the godaddy server already. Man I like those guys.

Looks like I may have to take a course or two to be able to opimize the data base.
