    1. Will MySQL run on Windows XP HOME ?
    2. XP HOME does not have IIS. Do I need IIS if I'm just playing around with MySQL ? Am I confusing MySQL servers with web servers ?

I believe MySQL server will run on XP HOME but it is not a web server. XP HOME does not support IIS. You need 2000/XP PRO or 2000/2003 server to host IIS. However, I don't see any reason you can't install apache on your box and run that.

To clarify, MySQL is a database server. It's what your web application talks to to query for data.

Just to confirm what Kodo said, mySQL will work on XP Home and so will apache. So if you want you can run a full fleged server off XP Home. You just can't do it with IIS which is MS's webserver software.

IIS is never required to run mySQL anyways, and neither is apache. Although you can't do much with mySQL unless you have something to use it with, and usually it's webpages which use mySQL but programs can use it, and even things like MS access can connect to a mySQL DB.

Thanks. I will install it then and least I can play around with the commands just to familiarise myself with it. I didn't realise I could install Apache. Sounds fun. Thanks for your guidance.

Oh dear, I installed Apache on XP home and it doesn't work (start). Looking through the service errors it's trying to read the config file in an easyphp folder which doesn't exist. I didn't install install PHP yet. Back to the drawing board.

It would be somethign in the apache configuration. I haven't used it on windows in quite awhile but it's very customizable, you can always recompile it anyway you like too. :)

By default it most likely expects php but if you check the config file it should have something to disable that. It's not a requirement.

I'm getting there. I installed Apache and PHP and seem to be OK. I installed Mysql, but ran into a problem. I installed mysql and ran the admin tool. In the environment box it says the ODBC drivers are missing so I just installed them, but still get a message to say not there. They are there in the Windows directory though.

Also, when the admin tool first started I entered a username of root and also a password. When I type 'mysql -u root -p' it asks for a password and will accept nothing. Get a message error 1045 access denied for user root@localhost using password yes (or no). Is this tied up with the driver problem ?
