    help?

My system wants to dial out on dial up internet every time it starts up. Norton Internet Sec 2005 and Spy sweeper show no nasty programs at work in the back ground. It may be my accounting or some other installed program at work. Is there any program for windows XP which will tell you what is causing these mysterious dial atemps to the internet?

    Thanx Al:)

Could be a dialer those programs have missed. Also check the RUN locations in the registry for suspicious executables:
Start > Run > regedit > OK (using the left hand panel scroll down to each one of these locations and view the list of entries on the right hand side):

    1) HK_LOCAL_MACHINE > SOFTWARE > MICROSOFT > WINDOWS > CURRENTVERSION > RUN

    2) HK_LOCAL_MACHINE > SOFTWARE > MICROSOFT > WINDOWS > CURRENTVERSION > RUNSERVICES (if There is one)

    3) HK_CURRENT_USER > SOFTWARE > MICROSOFT > WINDOWS > CURRENTVERSION > RUN

or you could make it easier and use the free standalone program called StartupControlPanel like I mostly do. ;)

Also your system could be configured to dial out whenever a program needs to connect to Internet (and belive me it is way more often than you'd think)
Start > Control Panel > Internet Option > Connections tab and make sure 'Never dial a connection' is selected on the Dial-up/VPN settings list.

It could also be one of your applications like Norton, SpySweeper trying to auto update.

Does your Firewall alert you to a dial up attempt if so what is the name of the application trying to dial out? eg. xxxxxxx.exe

I had that problem with a computer once. It turned out to be Norton. In the end I had to disable norton to get rid of the problem... Hope someone has a better solution than that! :)

On that comp it didn't say anything about what was attempting to go online, it just popped up the dial up window.
