Mysterious registry entry...

I'm running Windows Vista Home Premium on an Acer laptop. It came with a lot of software on it, and I've put a lot more on it, but try as I might, I can't account for a certain registry entry. It's for "Waves Audio." I've read up on Waves Audio at their site, and I can say I've never knowingly downloaded anything from them. I'm wondering if it could be a part of some other program I have, or maybe something having to do with the sound hardware on my machine?

If not, I'll just delete the entry - but I'll still wonder how it got in my registry.

    Any ideas would be appreciated.

    Thanks!

well I have a Toshiba laptop running vista Home premium here and also have "waves Audio" under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE SOFTWARE but to be honest I couldn't find any specific info on it...so it would be nice to know. More than likely something critical...so i aint touching it personally LOL

Its possible that MS pays Waves Audio to include its app on Vista to perform some media function for a Vista App, and its probably embedded into the program so there is no mention of it. If you look around in Vistas Media applications I'd bet you'll find a function exactly corresponding to what waves audio does.

Studiot, is this what you're looking for? (Sorry, I'm kind of new at this.)

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE SOFTWARE\WAVES AUDIO\MAXXAUDIO

Appzalien, I can't glean any info from the Waves site about anything that might be related to anything on my computer. The MaxxAudio says that it's available to PC makers to include on their laptops, to make the small speakers sound better - that could relate to my machine, but it's really very vague. (Plus, my speakers sound pretty thin!)

    Hi

Very likely to be part of the audio codec/driver that goes with the audio chip on the PC, relates to this company http://www.maxx.com/Content.aspx?id=460 who make audio chips (DSP chips) and driver soft for the likes of Toshiba, Sony etc ( very likely ACER also use their tech in some PCs, even though they may not be a major partner of theirs )

Waves Audio software is also integrated into both Realteks and Microsoft audio codecs, so likely a registry entry would come from that part of the codec even Waves Audio is not the major audio driver.
