CatT I can't follow the rules

i noticed an Nxxx number on a google map tonight as some sort of label for an intersection near what i was googling. plugging it back into google, it leads to streetadvisor and some other sites, and clearly designates the place in question.

given the "N" and the nature of some other hits, i'm inclined to think it means "neighborhood". is this some new system i've somehow missed? is my town divided into 100s of "N" sectors, maybe a block or two in size?

whose system is this? google? streetadvisor? the govt itself?

the town in question has 8 precincts ("wards" or "burroughs" for some of you); the 3-digit N number bears no similarity that i can see, fwiw.
