i have just built a new Pc from scratch, along the way i noticed that three of my disk drives under Device Manager "Disk Drive" tree have the name of the product IE make and product like WDC WD50 00AAKS-00V1A0 SATA Disk Device

My OS drive simply says "Disk Drive"

How do I get it to report the type of drive that it is ? any ideas how Device Manager picks this up?

    Thanks ??

You mean Windows Explorer? Windows Explorer does not show you disk drives, but partitions and the name that you have given them.

You can get the device name on Disk Management (Properties).

No not Explorer these as you say display the partitions and can be named and changed at will - I am looking under the Device Manager

IE Click Start - then System properties - then Device Manager - then click the tab next to Disk Drives to show my 3 disks

Two have the detailed names (like my first post) and my OS disk just has "Disk drive"

When you look at the properties it brings up a window with again this name and repeatedly shows just "Disk drive" on tabs General, Driver and Details ??

Very odd.... do you know where Win7 gets this info from and how to correct it?

Any ideas would be most welcome... thanks

    Ok, I see...

When you are in these device properties, tab Details, what does it show you under Property 'Hardware Ids'? This is where the device information are found.

Under the Hardware IDs drop down it gives 6 options. 5 are related to what the device is an example is:-

    SCSI\DiskOCZ-SOLID3______________2.22

So it has the correct ID even the firmware rev of 2.22

    the 6th option is "GenDisk"

So how does it get this info above to show up for the disk in question? ie for the Properties "Title" of the disk drive ?? very confusing. I have of course tried a refresh etc...
