Ok First off i would like to say what hardware i have and what im trying to do with it.

I have an iomega storcenter 1tb connected to a linksys router via ethernet. i have already set up the entire network and i am able to completely access it from my pc via a network drive. now i would like to be able to set up access to the drive via the internet. ie: work, buddies house, etc...

i have already read up everything i could and tried to access it, and im encountering some probs.

First off my iomega is set up with a shared folder that is only has access with a username and password. for security reasons lets "pretend" the user/password is peanut/butter

So i configured my router to forward the ftp port 20/21 to my NAS and i unblocked the windows firewall for both of those ports.

Now when i tried typing nothing ftp://wan.ip in internet explorer nothing happened nor did the ftp://lan.ip

Then i realized it might have something to do with the user/password
so i tried typing ftp://peanut:butter@wan.ip and ftp://peanut:butter@lan.ip in internet explorer and still nothing happens.

Now i also tried both of the above on the windows explorer address bar and only the ftp://peanut:butter@lan.ip works but not the wan.ip

Bear in mind all this stuff was only tested on my local PC that is connected to my NAS/router.

This stuff is killing me and ive spent way too much time trying to set it up, With the wife nagging the hell out of me to get off the CPU.
Any help on this matter would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanx guys

one last thing when i try to access ftp://peanut:butter@wan.ip on windows explorer i get this error message:

an error occured opening that folder on the ftp server. Make sure you have permission to access that folder.
    details:
    200 switching to ASCII mode
    227 entering passive mode (192,168,1,XXX,29,80)
    425 security: bad ip connecting

    well thats it
    thanx again

Have you tried logging into it on another port scheme? Try http://wanip:80 or http://wanip:8080 and see if you get a web login screen.
**Of course you need to setup your storcenter to listen for that port. port forward 8080 to the device. good luck. let us know.

    hope this is mildly helpful.

well i tried just about everything and im ready to give up....i even bought a new router and i still dont know how to set it up....

my storecenter doesnt allow you to select a port to listen for. The only thing i can do is check a box that says FTP.

my only option is to select the ports on the router. im probably just doing it wrong.

You can not access local Network components over the Intrenet unless they are configured to answer to a specific port and the Router is configured that this port is opened toward the IP of the component.

So give your NAS a static IP, and if its ftp is configured to the standard port 21 open ports 21 and 22 toward its static IP.
