    Nonprofit constraints of course ...

But, with that said, I need a network attached storage OS ... Suggestions?

I do not want one that is in the thousands of dollars range either. Remember - nonprofit.

I want to use it primarily for backup, but eventually I would like to be able to access offsite without vpn (I haven't gotten that far yet.):-D

Edit: And yes, I tried a search. Perhaps my search parameters don't like the tags? LOL

Freenas is exactly what your asking for, and you mentioned it in your title.

Well, yes. I did some research and even looked at NAS-lite, I think that was the name.

    Have you used freenas though?

How is the setup and use on ease .... It has been a while.

How did you set for outside access remotely on the network? I was thinking of isolating it to the intranet. PCI is kicking my behind ... another DMZ and I think I will just flippin scream!

I used NAS lite at home and when I needed a back for work I bought several license for some old boxes I had. They were easy to setup and they run forever.
I setup freenas once but didn't really like it as much.
