NAV 2002 not updating automatically/Zone Alarm firewall

Ever since I started using the free ZoneAlarm firewall, I have been unable to get my NAV2002 updates automatically. Lately I have been doing the updates manually.

I was wondering if it would help for me to uninstall/reinstall the Norton. Would the Norton Antivirus Definitions download bring my NAV2002 totally up to date? Should I dump the NAV 2002 and go with something newer?

Many people on the forums here are not too keen on Norton. I was thinking of switching to AVG, but I noticed today that they will discontinue support for AVG 6.0. That is a consideration for me.

I am a relatively new Zone Alarm free firewall user, and it seems to work well at protecting my computer. But I have had problems configuring it. In addition, my version, 5.1, seems to be "buggy". For instance, I get the message "help not available" for any topic. Also, the option to update is grayed out. I was told that my download was probably corrupted. So I guess what I'm asking is for recommendations for good, easy-to-use firewalls and reliable anti-virus software.

As you can tell, I am a newbie who is trying to learn. Thanks for your informed input.

 

I would check the settings in Zone Alarm and see if they are blocking Norton from accessing the internet. This is most likely what is happening. As for AVG If you read through the BETA testing page it states that they will most likely have a new FREE version, at the end of November.

I use Avast! free firewall (it's available here) as a replacement for NAV. It updates daily, and nothing has got past it so far. Zone Alarm gave me problems, also, so I've gotten rid of it. Try Sygate free firewall (also available here), it seems to be less buggy than ZA. There is also the option of a hardware firewall, a common feature in most routers, for instance.

I had Norton 2002, then I got AVG free, I now run Avast free version, I think it is a great free AV, it has never let me down.
