NAV 2003 (could have been 2004) came installed on my compaq 2199 (WinXP SP1) laptop. I wanted to remove it and replace it with symantec corprate which I can download and update free from my schools webpage. So I uninstalled NAV and liveupdate from the add/remove menu. Everything was fine until I rebooted and now I can't get an internet connection. I've been searching google for the past 2 hours and I've found one web site that mentions this problem but did not help because I could not find the keys they mentioned.

    http://cc.uoregon.edu/cnews/spring2003/navtrouble.html

I've had this problem before on my desktop when I uninstalled System Works and my comcast connnection went out. I had the tech over for 2 hours trying to figure out what was wrong until i reinstalled system works and then eveerything worked perfectly. Unfortunately I do not have the restore disks for this laptop and cant reinstall NAV. I've tried manually uninstalling NAV from my registry, but I can find no traces of it left. I know I am missing something, perhaps some registry key that still needs to be deleted? Can anybody help me or point me in the right direction

    What is your ip address?

    Open cmd.exe

    type:

    ipconfig /all

    Give us the IP.

Its not plugged into the cable modem, i'm on my desktop right now but i did as you said and here is what happened.

    Windows IP configuration

    Host name: presario
    primary dns suffix:
    Node Type: hybrid
    ip routing enabled: no
    wins proxy enabled: no

    Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:

Media disconnected (my cable is unplugged)
then it names my NIC adapter and the physical address.

So i guess I do not have an IP address, but as I understand it, I should even though I'm not pluged into the cable modem?

No, you only have an IP if you are connected to a network device.

Hook up your cable modem and try again :)

    At the cmd.exe prompt, type:

    Does it work?

    Check your hosts file entries:

    start, run, %systemroot%\system32\drivers\etc

    Open it wilth notepad.

Try to browse from Safe Mode w/ Networking, if in XP.

    From cmd.exe, type

    tracert yahoo.com

Post the IP address of the first 3 hops.

i chose safe mode with networking and i was able to browse the internet. I looked at the host file and it only had 1 entry. 127.0.0.1. When i chose safe mode it gave me 2 options for users instead of just one. IT gave me administrator and "derrrick", thats me. When i boot normally i always just choose derrick, this time I chose "administrator" i dont know what the difference is because when i go to user accounts in control pannel they are both administrators.

I forgot to ping yahoo but i can go back and try it if you still want me to.

    1 timed out
    2 68.87.229.245
    3 12.125.194.13
    4 12.123.4.226

Can you tell me which F-key brings up the screen to boot in safe mode?
Can I ask where we're going or what you think the problem might be?

I think you didn't have norton antivirus, but rather norton firewall or norton internet security.

You should never, ever time out on your default gateway unless a firewall is on your computer.

    Run msconfig.

Go to services tab, and hide all Microsoft services.

Post what is left in the list.

It was NAV, it was pestering me about live update every time i booted up. As for firewall, i dont know, i got this laptop from ebay and everything was preinstalled. The only thing I removed was NAV and liveupdate, then it stopped working.

I'm going to switch over and see what happens. If you would like to communicate through msm, I can do that also.

Let us know how it works out.

Corporal Punishment brought a up good point.

Maybe the winsock is partially corrupt. Try this app he pointed me to:

    http://majorgeeks.com/download4180.html

You can download it from SafeMode w/ Networking.

i installed symantec av after finally being able to connect to my university's website and now everything works fine. Symantec av must have filled the void that Norton left when I uninstalled it. As I said before, I had the exact same problem with norton system works on another pc awhile back. I'm suprised that that I couldnt find any other posts about this problem. I read alot of posts about people unable to remove NAV but only 1 mentioned that you could lose network connection. I simply uninstalled from the add/remove programs like I would any other program.

I guess symantec/nortons got my by the shorthairs until somebody figures out what is going on. Thanks for your help adrynalyne.

Glad it all worked out. Still not sure exactly what broke.

But if it works, go with it :)
