NEC DVD-Burner not playing DVD movies?

I have the NEC 3500 dvd burner. It burns DVDs, CDs and read CDs and data DVDs fine. But for som reason it wont play DVD movies. I've tried 3 DVDs from my collection and they wont play for some reason. Is this a known problem? Any way to fix it? Any help would be much appreciated

What software are you using to play the movie?

Do you get an error message and do you have the correct codecs installed?

Did they ever play previously etc?

I've tried Real Player and Windows Media Player.

When I try it in Real Player it just shuts down and when I play it in Windows Media Player I get "unknown DVD". I'm not sure what codecs I need but I do have DivX :/

They work fine on my regular DVD Player(the one hooked up to the TV) but they dont play on my DVD-ROM burner :/

 

WMP doesn' have DVD player codecs and I don't think Real Player does, either. This the Freecodecinstaller that will give you the codecs necessary for WMP to play DVDs http://www.cmax.it/download/freecodecinstaller.zip I just d/led a copy and scanned it for viruses and malware. There is also VLC player http://www.videolan.org/

Glad to see it's sorted, but just a word of caution.

Do not install codecs or codec packs needlessly as they can make your system unstable.

Only install them when and if you need them.

The best way is to use something like GSpot which will scan the movie file in question, tell you the codec required and if it's installed, as well as provide download links.

There are many others also that do a similar thing like AVI Codec and Video Inspector etc.

 

I am having a semiller problem . My liteon 1633s worked perfect for many months .It now won't play movies or read dvd's that i had recored. Some time it will read dvd disks that i recored ,but usually it will tell me that no disk is in the drive .
