Necessary Services

Norton Antivirus just found Bloodhound. Exploit 6 on my machine. Of course I can't even find the file to delete it. But when trying to follow the removal instructions from their website, it suggested that I turn off unnecessary services. How can I find where these services are and most importantly, what is necessary?

    Thanks

I don't know if this is what Norton means in this case. They may mean, for the moment, go into task manager, turn off running programs that aren't necessary, then do the following steps that they tell you. In that case someone will have to tell you what they are. I know you have to keep several very vital ones. Like svchost.exe, I think.

In general, depending on your OS, there are many services that run all the time that you can change from automatic to manual or disable which helps your computer run better.

Go to http://www.blackviper.com and it gives lots of info. I found this site posted on here somewhere before so it's good.

At this page he has a nice grid of all XP services, and what to do with them for optimum performance. Make sure you read the site well though, because his tweaks may not be best for everybody.

I tried to edit this into my previous message, but the three minutes were up.

Most of the time, just booting into safe mode will turn off all the services necessary to follow Norton's instructions.

WELCOME barnburner, yeah, we like to complicate things, but that sounds like the simple and best answer.

The black viper site though is great for a long term answer to keep things disabled for good. "RESOURCES HOGS" -- love that term
