Received this after 1st attempt to install W10 from W7Pro

"We couldn't install Windows 10 (so reverted back to W7).
    0 (or O?) 0xC1900101 - 0x30018
The installation failed in the FIRST_BOOT phase with error during SYSPREP_SPECIALIZE operation"

After the system reverted to W7, MBAM no longer worked. The above error code seems to be a WMI problem.

It was suggested that I try to reinstall W10 again (using the media console again) but I'm unclear if that's ok given that there seems to be another corruption now.

Panther systerr.log file from C: is attached - is there something that won't delete and is preventing W10 from installing and if so, any idea how to fix it??

Would appreciate any help and which steps I'd take first. Thank you so very much!

The alternative to trying the Media Creation Tool again is a clean install. With that you can save your personal files but would lose all currently installed apps. This may not be palatable if there are paid for apps.

You could run the system file checker before trying again to upgrade. This would ensure Win 7 is in good shape before you start. Open an elevated command prompt and type sfc /scannow

Something I could/should have mentioned earlier, before starting to upgrade disconnect everything - printers, external drives, network cables, absolutely everything except your mouse.

Thanks so very much! Ran sfc /scannow in elevated command prompt 2x. And I tracked down a temp folder that the prior days W10 files from the unsuccessful 1st install, which may have been somehow interferring ...deleted them once comfortable that was ok.

W fingers crossed, the 2nd attempt using MCT was successful. Computer takes forever to boot- maybe a prior prob + it's maxed out at 4gb ram.

Can you think of any way to increase boot time AND if I share the temp folder location (and log?) w many old - now deleted- files, could you tell me if it's ok to delete the files/folder?

Had to try to revive this computer bc a) needed b/u system as current 6yo laptop fan is gone and b) the 14yo vostro 1015 has a far better screen that dramatically helps a severe vision disability, (esp'y when working w speed isn't an issue).

Thank you again and would I need to post those questions in a new thread??

I swear, all of you are THE BEST!! Thank you for helping to make the world a better place!!

Really pleased that you have now succeeded in upgrading to Win 10. However you've got to be realistic about performance on a 14 year old system with only 4Gb memory - it's always going to crawl whatever you do. There are three key issues - cpu speed, memory size and disk speeds, all of which have massively changed over the years. You may, at a price, be able to improve response times by fitting an additional 4Gb Ram and by replacing the hard disk with a SSD, but it's not possible to do much if anything about the cpu. It will really boil down to whether you can live with it or not. I have a couple of 7 yr old Lenovo Thinkpads on which I have fitted SSDs, bumped up memory to 8Gb and converted from MBR to GPT systems. They take about 1 minute 30 seconds to boot to a working desktop and I can live with that. 2 minutes or more I could not, it''s a personal thing.

Thank you SO MUCH for your counsel w this. I had to choose screen quality over other components at the time so 4gb is max ram and I believe it's a 1.6ghz processor. This system has a lot of disability software that required purchased updates for my current system. As my 2ndy computer and until I can afford a better system, this will be ok. I think.

I LOVE old thinkpads - workhorses - but again, at the time the screen quality was critical, so given cost, I landed w the vostro. Screen will be a factor w the next system.

Still have a ques re whether it's safe to delete old files/folders in C: and if so, how best to go about that. Will ask later today, after returning from some medical appts.

Thanks so much again! Really, VERY GRATEFUL for your kindness!
