    Hi,

My PSU (Cooler Master eXtreme 550W) fan was squealing. I tried tightening screws, etc. but it was still squealing, so I decided to just replace it. However, the power supply wants a 2 pin fan (on the board inside the PSU the fan pins that stick up only has one for power and ground, not one for monitoring).

Where the heck do you even buy a 2 pin 120mm fan? Newegg doesn't have any as far as I can tell. Alternatively, can I just take the 2 pin connector from the old fan and put it on the 3 pin fan, omitting the yellow monitoring wire? I've read on some other forums that say this is possible, but some pictures or a walkthrough would be very helpful...

    Hi Askantik,

I have run 3 pin fans on 2 pins many time. Do as you describe it. Make sure you use the correct two pins on the MB. Squeals can usually be fixed by punching a hole in the paper cover on one side of the old fan and introducing a small amount of light oil to the bearing. 3 in 1 is OK. Use tape to cover the hole. This may be only a temporary measure until you can find the correct fan, but I have had them run for several years with no problems.

    Good Luck, Jim
