Need a driver Pro - to give me a few pointers...

So I have been asked to help along with this medieval machine.
Its crawling on XP sp2. They guy gets hysterical when I talk to him about update or preinstall so thats out of the question.

He has a bunch of webcams that go via USB but they all get detected as unknown devices. I can't install any drivers because instructions on both cams say Windows will autodetect and install them.

Howdo i get the basic say XP sp3 driver package from?

I would have tracked the driver but the guy lives 200 miles away from me and I forgot to take along one of his cams plug and play it on my pc and track the driver via the hardware manager...

Any help is appreciated. Plus I know my way around a PC, you don't have to baby walk me through it.

 

While it's not a "driver pack", you can download the SP3 install file from this link. Send this link to your friend, have him install it, have him do all Windows Updates, including the optional and hardware updates, then try the webcams again.... if they say that they'll plug-n-play with Windows XP, then this should do the trick. GOOD LUCK!

(if this doesn't work, we're going to need the makes and model numbers of the USB devices he's trying to use)

 

Thats out of the question. As I said he won't let me do anything of that sort.
I would have just wiped that out and put in a fresh xp sp3. If it can work on sp2 it can work on sp3 as well.

I've been googling but there are so many driver matches that I can barely find any good info on the stock drivers xp carries with the install disc. I was just hoping someone has that sort of useless trivial information locked in his brain. But hey I guess I'll ask him to bring the cams when he visits so I see if i can isolate and copy the drivers that get it working on my machine. Considering its not the rust bucket hardware thats the problem.


Any way I'll make sure to post the result, who knows some other lost soul might need bullshit driver resolving freak ninja methods.

 

I don't see why installing SP3 is out of the question, it won't wipe out any data, and won't (or shouldn't) cause any problems whatsoever, but what do I know, right? He could provide you with the model numbers from the cameras, and you could post them here.

Have you ever tried to argue sense into a middle aged man that acts like a 5 year old. I can't exactly slap him and do it against his will can I. And you shouldn't be offended. Its just that we are looking for some bullshit that I bet few people on earth are going to be ever looking for.

But hey at least it develops problem resolving skills Hahaha.
