    Hello, all

I had a crash due to a virus and had to wipe my computer and start from scratch.

Here's my problem... I have an HP dvd Writer 940d burner and I can't find the install CD. I need the driver. HP's website doesn't have it for doenload and their phone support was as useless as tits on a mule.

Does anybody know where one can look dor drivers for a device like this. I understand that the driver for the 940i would be acceptable too.

Thanks in advance for your help!

is it an aftermarket dvd or did it come with your computer, because if it came with the pc the drivers should already be on the system. Have you located it on device manager and if so does it show an error message. I tried to loacte them otherwise and I ran into a dead end. Hang on someone else may be able to locate them for you.

It is an aftermatket DVD burner. I can see it in device manager. The driver that Windows automatically installed was Microsoft's standard CD driver.

    Thanks

I'm curious... what exactly is the problem? Windows XP doesn't have built-in native DVD burning. Just because Windows says it's a CD drive doesn't mean a thing. Have you tried burning anything in it? Have you tried burning a DVD using your DVD burning software? What about DVD reading? Have you tried a DVD disc like a movie or DVD data disc?

BTW- I'm just assuming you have Windows XP since you didn't provide any information about the version of Windows you have, or anything else, other than you did a clean install of some version of Windows; I'm not trying to be an a-hole (most people tell me I don't have to try LOL ) but we really could use more info here.

Sorry for the lack of detailed info. It is Windows XP Pro. What happened is that the driver that XP installed is a CD driver, not a DVD driver. It is treating the DVD like it is a CD, in not recognizing the capacity of the drive. Therefore (according to HP support), Windows does not recognize the DVD as a valid media. I can, however burn a CD-RW disk.

HP told me that I have to install their driver for the device.

    Thanks

What happens if you put a DVD disc (like a movie for example) in the drive? What type of cable are you using? If it's an IDE drive, you should be using an 80wire cable, and not the old style of 40wire cable. The connectors still have 40pins, the ribbon cable has twice the number of connections on the 80wire and work best with newer drives. I had a DVD-RW that wasn't reading all discs correctly, and also read some discs VERY slowly and I almost said "the drive is dying". I opened the case and saw the drive was on the old style 40wire cable; I yanked it out, used a new 80wire cable, and the drive now works perfectly. Also, if you have 2 drives sharing the IDE cable, DO NOT use cable select for the jumper settings. Use master for the drive at the end connector, and slave for the drive on the middle connector. You can also try to uninstall the drive from the Device Manager and restart the PC and let Windows reinstall the drive. Do you have any CD/DVD burning software installed? Roxio and Sonic software have been known to cause issues with CD/DVD drives. I also found some info at the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314096
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/316529/ (this link doesn't talk about DVD drives specifically, but there's lots of good info along the lines of the problem that you're having, and should prove to be a good "jumping off" point)

Anyway, look into all these things, and please post what happens when a DVD disc is put in the drive.... Good luck!

I'm having the exact same issues with my hp dvd 940d, and I haven't been able to find any drivers or support from HP either. I can read and write cds, including cd isos written to dvd, but no blank dvds or anything bigger than a cd. does anyone know where to find these drivers?
