    Hey Geeks.

I have a Gateway Solo 2500 (400 Celeron, 296 mb RAM, 6 Gig HD, Win98SE) sitting around an collecting dust. I was thinking of installing a Linux operating system on it (I've been interested in Linux recently, but I don't want to install it onto my main computer). Do you all have any suggestions for a suitable Linux OS for a low end computer like that? I've visited various sites (Mandrake, Suse, Libranet), but most of those Linux systems are for newer computers with better hardware.

Let me know if you need any more info, and thanks in advance :)

Use the forum search option, man. Here's a thread to get ya started: Linux Poll Vote You may be able to find some good information about the OS version of Linux that is best suitable to your system.

Knoppix, Gnoppix They are both good looking GUI models. If you want to learn linux, try starting with something console based, ie debian or slackware.

Knoppix is based on Debian, as is bonsai linux, which im running on my server at the moment.. the installer is quite easy too :)

Hey, yeah, knoppix is just the coolest. I don't know much about computers yet, but the knoppix distro is definitely the best for me that I've tried yet.

Oh, I'd say do the HDD install, too, don't just run it from the RAM (even if you could, your system doesn't have too much "horsepower").

Then, look into recompiling the kernel to make it smaller, faster...
    I've not done that yet.

But yeah, I'd say go for it. I'd love to hear an update on how it works out.

I say Fedora (RedHat) or Mandrake are the best bets if you have no experience with Linux. You will get them up and running, although you won't learn as much, per se, from using them. Definately helps cut the learning curve, IMO, though.

You'll also want to join a Linux User Group of some kind. There's dozens of them online. Basically there just message boards like this one, but devoted to figuring out how to use Linux.

Thanks guys. I'm kinda leaning towards either Knoppix or Mepis since they can load from disk without having to install it over the Windows. That sounds like a good way to experiment first. My biggest issue, though will be whether or not the OS will recognise the Linksys Ethernet card I use to connect to the internet. But, we'll see.

I don't know when I'm going to try this experiment, but I'll be sure to post a thread and let you all know what happened...unless, of course, my computer self destructs and takes me along with it! :D

    Thanks again.
