I have been a faithful follower and user of Firefox since its inception. Unfortunately the last few versions have been giving me problems with Shockwave player crashing, Firefox itself not responding, along with assorted other little issues that have grown over time. Any ideas on a better browser, or at least a competent one? I generally play some flash games, listen to Youtube and watch videos, as well as watch online t.v.

Obi-Wan's, you are my only hope.

Have you scanned your system fully for any kinda virus or malware that could be causing this issue.

I am using the newest version and it seems to be running fine.

32 or 64 bit OS? And while I'm asking: Win 7? XP?

Those questions aside, trying a new browser is relatively painless, check out:

|MG| Palemoon

|MG| Waterfox

I use them both, Waterfox being my main, Palemoon my backup. I still find that browser performance can be improved by judicial use of addons and some settings and about:config tweaks regardless of promises made by devs.

Your mileage may vary... ;)

I would recommend the avant browser ultimate it comes with 3 rendering engines. Chrome 26 - Firefox 20 and IE 10.

I have been using it for a while now on windows 8 32bit and never had any problems so far.

I had the same issues with Firefox on my Netbook. Not a virus, but some update that Microsoft pushed out a while back. That is why more and more sites are going to html5, so that they do not have to depend on Flash.

As for the OP question, there is Chrome, which has Flash built into it. A lot quicker than Firefox, when it comes to doing things, and plus side is that the sync for it, does not crash all the time, like Mozilla's, and Chrome is cross-platform compatible out of the box.

Sorry, but anything with the words IE in it, is like walking around yelling out loud, that you do not lock your house, and how many toys you have laying around inside it.

Also, it does not come with the IE rendering engine built into it, it utilizes the IE rendering engine for IE, by loading IE in the background (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trident_(layout_engine)). Yes, also it was designed by a Chinese programmer, so another big Red Flag. Also IE has had issues for some time, with Flash not working correct on it either.

I run Win 8 x 64 and use MSIE 10 and Firefox.

I have not experienced any problems with either.

Golden Skull's idea sounds like a good place to start.

My note is to affirm that there seems to be nothing wrong with FF and my set up.

Wish you well.

Hi comperroruter.

You did not mention what actions you have taken to fix the problems.

First clear out all of the browser's cache.
CCleaner Slim can do a good job of cleaning the Firefox / Pale Moon cache.

Then do a complete Uninstall of all Adobe plugins, reboot then install the current versions.

Adobe Flash Player Uninstaller

Download Shockwave stand-alone installer, uninstaller

If that does not help, try this:
Reset Firefox – easily fix most problems

If you are still having problems, I suggest that you first backup essential settings like bookmarks, speed dial, history, etc.
Then do a complete uninstall of the browser.

You may want to use Revo Uninstaller to uninstall the browser.

As cipher already mentioned, add-ons can cause conflicts, so when you reinstall, do them one at a time and then test the
multimedia stuff.
Make a list of your add-ons if needed.
I keep a bookmark folder with the download links for the ones that I use.

Once everything has been fully removed and reinstalled, things should work more smoothly.

Thanks for the response. I scan my system with anti-virus, spyware, malware, etc.....religiously. That is not the issue. The only time I run into problems is when I am running something that uses Shockwave player. On occasion, generally a closing and reopening of Firefox fixes it, the browser will stop responding all together. I believe it is also related to shockwave/flash.

I use CCleaner religiously as well as malware scanning. I have uninstalled Firefox, Adobe, and did the add-on check. Nothing seems to be a problem until shockwave is needed by whatever game or site I am using. I think I am going to give Chrome a go and see how that works out.

Thanks all for the responses. I am running Windows 7, 64-Bit. Plenty of RAM, Processor, and Memory. Pretty certain it is not a system issue. After googling the problem I did do clean install of Adobe and Firefox and checked out the add-ons and it still gives me issues. I am going to run with Chrome for awhile and see how that works for me.

So that everyone is clear about this, did you use both of the Adobe Uninstallers?

The Shockwave Uninstaller shown HERE is under the heading Windows 98/2000/XP, but that is the only one
that I see for Windows systems.

There is more info at Troubleshoot Shockwave Player installation | Windows

Are you positive that you need shockwave player?
I ask because I do not have it installed on any of my computers.

Here's the difference between shockwave and flash

I use windows 8 pro x64 with media center, and run firefox, well, actually, minefield, and I don't have those issues. 24a1

But, don't go for this, cause I have seen issues. Your issues, I haven't seen so far.

Here are a few notes that may help.
(it's really late and i'm really tired but i'll try to get this right ;))

I'll be referring to Firefox although I'm using Pale Moon version 20.1, but this should still apply to Firefox.

If you go to Tools > Add-ons > Plugins and if you have Adobe Flash Player installed,
you will see that it is listed as Shockwave Flash, not Flash Player.

You can confirm that it is Flash Player by checking the version number.
The current version of Flash Player is 11.7.700.224
The current version of Shockwave Player is 12.0.2.122

Although you can Disable a plugin from the Add-ons Manager, there is no way to Delete the plugin.

Here's how to manually delete a plugin.
• in the address bar, type about:config and press Enter
• in the Search bar, type plugin.expose
• you should see plugin.expose_full_path. The default setting is False. Right click that item and click Toggle to set it to True.
• in the address bar, type about:plugins and press Enter
• using the path and filename shown,
open Windows Explorer file manager and first Copy the file to some backup location, and then Delete the file.

Some plugins use several files.
Remove any old plugins or any that should not be there.

If the plugin is not enabled, it will not appear in about:plugins.

You should also go to Plugin Check and Updates to see if they are up to date.
