I currently have a acer AC713 which cost around £60, its a big heavy shit thing and i would like a flat screen monitor which is very good for gaming and good for viewing videos etc.

    My rig is:

    AMD Athlon 64 3000+ Venice @ 2.12Ghz
    XFX Geforce 7800GTX 256mb
    2 x 512MB Samsung pc3200 DDR 400mhz RAM
200GB SATA 150 Maxtor 8MB Cache Hard Drive
    ABIT Fatal1ty AN8 SKT 939 NVIDIA® nForce4 Ultra M/B
    Hiper Type R 580W Modular ATX2.2 PSU - Blue
Creative Labs Sound Blaster X-Fi XtremeMusic

I want to be able to get the most out of gaming mainly but would like videos etc to be nice aswell.

If you guys could point me in the right direction i would be very grateful.

    Price range is around £250

You may want to consider this article. I still think CRT is best for gaming, but this describes possibly your best bet (or at least what to look for) in flat screen monitors.

CRT is the best option if you are a serious game player. 0ms response times and variable and higher refresh rates, and lower dot pitch for crisp edges. Still trying to find a new good CRT these days is very hard. If you can find one get the best CRT availible for gaming which is a Diamond Mitsubishi Pro Superbright 19", which can do 1024x768x120Hz! Also the 19" Flatscreen NEC models have the same tube as the Mitsubishi, and look the same but are heavier and imo ugly.
If you have to get an LCD the Viewsonic 19" range is in your budget, and they have 8ms response times and very nice viewing angles. They offer a 2ms model but that is over £300 I believe. I wouldn't go for a widescreen LCD as many games need to be tweaked to hell to get them to fit the screen, and sometimes just cannot be made to fit the screen, turning a 19" widescreen into a 15" squarescreen. Viewsonic is the way to go :D

i agree with the others. CRT is still the best. but with LCDs catching up, u might as well go for em. remember the lower the response times the better it is for gaming. viewsonics are all the rage, so go for em....

I would really like a flat screen as i dont like the big monitors they take up to much room id rather something slick and stylish.

I've been looking now for a while and these are the ones that have struck my attention and are quite slick :D

After comparing these monitors i came across this:
    VGA up to 1280 x 1024 non-interlaced (max. 60Hz)
Does this mean i would only get 60hz refresh rate at 1280*1024 resolution as this is the resolution i use for all my games or will that not matter much as somebodies kinda stated?

I want this monitor mainly for gaming but i do watch quite a few DVD's aswell so i wouldnt like the quality to be poor.

Which would you buy as monitors are not my strong point!

    Thankyou!

If anybody knows of a better monitor i can get for around the same price mark please let me know, thankyou!

Hi im hoping you live in england but here is something i found, like I said these are very rare now unless you can find one private sale eg. e-bay (but there you will have no garuntee). This one has cosmetic damage only, I say who cares. With a screen like this you won't be looking at the shell (plus it's the superbright version).

I got this monitor 3 years ago and later the 23" version, selling the 19" on. I also ordered a new mouse (logitech mx300 I think). Overnight my game improved, it is so much better having the accuracy and speed of a screen like this.

Yes, seems like this is the refresh rate you will get for this resolution for a VGA connection. However, if it is available on your video card, you may want to consider a DVI connection, as the first and third monitors you linked us to has an input for this. See this link for a description of the DVI interface, and how you could benefit from it.

I would NOT go for Viewsonic.

I'm on my third LCD in 3 months.

CRT-wise they were fine for me.

They need help in the LCD QA department before I'll ever buy one from them again.

And yet ESWC used Viewsonic screens at their 2004/2005 tournaments, and it was nothing to do with sponsorship it was purely down to the best performer for games.

    Three times even?

    Maybe.

    Maybe not.

Lets also add that a good company that kows a product is faulty, would offer compensation, free repairs (regardless of warranty) or recall it.

I'm not alone with my opinion of Viewsonic LCDs (even with gaming). A quick trip to Google will show you that.

It could be that I was unlucky, but I'm not willing to spend the money again on Viewsonic to prove or disprove it.

I'm not familiar with these. Do they run year around, 24/7?

If not, the example is flawed. I said nothing of image quality.

I don't use the monitor for a single tournament.

Image Quality means nothing if the LCD fails after a short time.

wat u say is true Adrynalyne. bottom line is everyone is entitled to their opinion. viewsonic works for some ppl and some dont.....

Having so many monitors fail from the same company and saying that no one should buy them is like saying don't go outside because I almost got struck by lightning once. It was unlucky for you but the bottom line is, gamers and organisers at the premiership of cyber sports chose viewsonic as the best brand in LCD monitors. Their opinion outweighs yours and, unlucky though you were, you should not hold a grudge. Just let it go. If I had been that unlucky I really wouldn't let it bother me, as Viewsonic would happily reinburse you including cost of returns or offer you a working replacement. In fact if I were you, I'd have been on the phone 24/7 and got a stonking deal from them due to my misfortune. You have to know how to work these things.

Can you recomend to the person who asked for advice a better make/model of screen for the same price? I will prove you wrong whatever you say because Viewsonic is the current market leader for gaming LCD's.

in other words, jedandjess is a whopping great big viewsonic fan :p

In other words, I should keep wasting my money on Viewsonic, because jedandjess knows best, and I am wrong, regardless of my mishaps. Because they are sponsored.

    LOL.

    ;)

By the way, my experience is not an opinion. Its a real life, not read on a website, experience.

To each their own. If the poster wants Viewsonic, so be it :)

A much better buy would be a Dell Ultrasharp. You can try to prove my wrong, but in the end, its your opinion, and you have proven nothing. Response time is not the only thing you have to watch out for.

I was going to buy one, and instead my impatience kicked in and I got this Viewsonic because I didn't have to order it. On my third, and as mentioned in a previous thread, I have a dying pixel already. :(

    Alas...impatience is not a virtue.
