    Hi,

I have Windows XP. I have the service pack installed and I am completely updated.

I tried to run a software program on my computer which edits photos called Roxio Photosuite 4.0. I got this message:

Your current security settings prohibit running Active X controls or You have blocked a publisher of one of the controls.
I have adjusted my security settings to medium. I have checked the appropriate boxes for enabling active x controls. (I would attach a screen capture, but that's the software I cannot open!)

I came here to get advice and began poking around. When I tried to access <control panel> <Adminstrative Tools> <Services> I got the same message.

    Any help much appreciated--TIA.

Does the title of the box with the error say Microsoft Internet Explorer?

Go into the registry and find this key
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Internet Settings \ Zones \ 0

In the right pane, you will see a lot of numbers. For the entry 1200, change the last number to 0 (double click it to change from whatever is there to 0)

    Then find this key
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Internet Settings \ Zones \ 0
Again, in the right pane look for 1200 and double click it so the last number, which is the decimal number can be changed to 0

Reboot and the error should be gone.

ah yes, rebooting. I am having a great deal of trouble getting the computer to shut down. I've been reading the stuff over at Microsoft but I am reluctant to start mucking about--their instructions aren't entirely clear. (And I have no idea how to operate in safe mode, so I really don't want to go there!)

Any other ideas for the ActiveX problem?
    TIA

    Oh Happy Day!

I ran Malware Bytes (log attached) and lo and behold if there wasn't an infection right in the Registry Key named Current_User\.....\zones

AND I re-booted successfully after removal, too.

Whew. Program opens just as it ought too--so it seems everything is fine. Thanks! If it hadn't been for your help I wouldn't have known that that was my problem.

    Have a great weekend plodr.
