OK, I DID NOT READ THE OTHER POSTS... I THINK I FOUND THE "FIX"... ANY OTHER ADVICE MAY BE HELPFUL, THANX

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Re-installing my OS and all software, almost done, did the Windows update (ALL) and now I get a dialog box after startup;

RTHDCPL.EXE – Illegal System DLL Relocation

The system DLL user.32 was relocated in memory. The application will not run properly. The relocation occurred because the DLL C:\WINDOWS\system32\HHCTRL.OCX occupied an address range reserved for Windows system DLLs. The vendor supplying the DLL should be contacted for a new DLL.

I'm fairly sure the problem is with Microsoft software, I made a restore point before I went to Windows Update, but I'd really rather not have to go through that again...

What can I do to fix this???

    MSI - K8NGM2-NBP
    AMD - Athlon 4600+ x2
    3gigs of DDRAM PC-3200
    GeForce 7600 GS 512mb
    Windows XP Pro SP-2

The first error is a Realtek driver and the second an MS issue. hhctrl.ocx is a Microsoft ActiveX which supports all functions of the user help interface. What I like to do when reinstalling cleanly is to burn a disk with the updates such as http://www.majorgeeks.com/RyanVMs_Windows_XP_Post-SP2_Update_Pack_d5085.html Others have their own favourites.

I find the easiest way to install those 85+ updates is in this manner as sometimes things go horribly wrong. I hope you don't have to go through this again using WU, that's a waste of time IMO with all the reboots. Try reinstalling those updates first.

    EDIT: Saw your edit.

ThanX, But.... How do I download the updates to put them on a disk???

All I know is to use the update site to update...

This also brings the question to mind, when MS stops supporting XP then I'll have the updates still available.

Here's a good thread to get you going. As to XP support, when MS stops supporting XP then there will be no new ones from any source. And yes, you will have the updates on disk. I run RyanVM about once every three months to have a new disk available just in case but I'm anal about that. As long as you have the majority on disk, then WU will be gentle.

    Hi

You have got the latest update from Microsoft that don't like Realtek :).
Go back to Microsoft and look for the fix for this problem. Look for "kb 935448"
