I downloaded an older version of Freemake Video converter from filehippo.com as this version is no longer available on the Freemake site. I did so because freemake keeps crashing.

Today when I switched on my computer I saw 'sniffer' txt file in my Local C drive. In properties it said it was a .log file. I tried deleting it but it said that it was open in 'Freemake Video capture'. So I proceeded to uninstall all freemake software. I still could not deleted the .log file.

I then went into regedit.exe - and searched for everything Freemake and deleted it. And then I tried deleting the sniffer file again, and it finally deleted. I don't remember if it went into the recycle bin or was deleted directly, as I did a disk cleanup.

I've run anitivirus, nothing came up on it. I did get a Malware warning yesterday when I was try to download Freemake 3.0 from c.net. However, my anti vrius caught it and moved it to virus vault and I then deleted it.

Does this mean I have malware in the computer? And as I was able to delete the file does it mean whatever the issue was (if any) is resolved? Please help. I need to know if I need to do any thing else.

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Not necessarily. This program is not considered malware.

All I can say is that obviously the issue with not being able to delete the file is resolved. If you are not having any other problems, I would not worry about it.

If you are having problems and/or you are worried about whether you have any malware, you will need to run the cleaning procedure give in the link below:

    I'm on Windows 7.

I really liked Freemake (converter and video capture), it worked fine at first, however when I upgraded to 3.0.1, it started crashing while editing videos esp mp4, so I reverted back to 3.0.0, it worked fine again for a while but yesterday it started crashing again and the sniffer.log txt file showed up.

Like I mentioned I removed everything freemake.

Can a program crashing be taken as a sign of malware presense?

However, since I removed freemake and the sniffer file, I've not had any problems.

Sometimes. But more often it is a problem with the program or a conflict with other software or drivers that are installed. Or a conflict with the version of Windows being used.

If you are not having any other problems with it removed then I would tend to say you are probably not having malware issues.

You can post additional questions about Freemake in our Software Forum.
