smokinbls the title thing is overrated

i have a 30gig Hd and i only have 5 gigs of space left i have NOTHING but 4 gigs of music on my HD and easy cd creator.. i have done many system restores like 25  ( i know that was dumb now ) but i was told to do that to get ride of spyware...............so my question is. can i restart my HD to a early point or what. I have burnt all music to discs and cd creater also
my only thought was to buy a new HD and a new windows xp pack but i don't want to spend 300 dollars
I KNOW THAT I CAN JUST BUY A SECOND HARD DRIVE AND USE BOTH
however this computer is a used one that i bought from a friend and he told me that their was allot of porn downloaded to this hard drive so if i can't restart back to the beginning than i will just have to buy a new hard drive and throw this one out..
    thank for any help

    What's yor operating system?

Have you ever done a Disk cleanup and defrag? Have you run searches for adware and spyware, and cleaned up any other junk?

What does explorer say is filling your HDD?

I concur with shockcell. Just make sure you have everything backed up and then reformat the hdd.

indeed, the quickest way to clean it is to do a Format C: and be done with it.
in the future use Ad-Aware to clean spyware and do not forget to use (and keep up-to-date) a virus scanner and a firewall.

    You have two options available....

    1. If you have backed up all important data and information and have all relevent disks to restore all your software then yes a re-install of windows is a good idea, especially if this machine wasnt originally yours and is full of junk.

    2. Like Mr P said you will need to start looking into finding out whats on your HD, clean it from any virii and spyware and find out where the missing space is gone too.

a nice graphical way and one of my favs to see whats eating up space on your HD is this app SpaceMonger http://www.werkema.com/software/spacemonger.html the version 1.4 is free ( a forthcoming version 2 will not be ) the readme file has all the instructions on useage.

just to let you know i am using windows xp home
yes i have defraged and done a disc clean up
and i have used "spybot" to remove spyware (i do not know if that was a good thing to use i got it free)

THE ONE BAD THING IS. IS THAT I DO NOT HAVE THE WIN XP DISC .
last night i deleated all my music and i copied the easy cd creator to discs
so i think that there is nothing on the computer that is at all important.
i never used it for anything personal. so far it has been to search the web i havent even downloaded anything to it yet
i now have 5.82 gigs of space left (wierd that i deleted 4 gigs of music)
    thanks for the help

Uhhh... maybe the porn is still hidden on the hard drive in some deep-down folder. People are devious like that. Any ideas where it might be? It probably won't be a folder in WINDOWS labeled "porn," but you should just look around before you do anything as drastic as formatting the drive.

I know that it had a huge amount of porn on it (i think that was why it was only 50 bucks and the porn was not from me......) i really do not know how to look in the hard drive to extract files or folders if i can even do that.
i have done disc clean up and defrag. i have also deleated all temp files and all cookies (3 weeks ago). is it possable to copy windows xp and than reformat? i do not have the cd or any codes

You'll need the CD to install the OS.

    Run a search for
    .jpg
    .gif
    .wmv
    .mpg
    .mov
files. If you see any you don't recognise, make a note of the folder. If it's not yours, get rid of it.

Try the spacemonger app that Halo recommended earlier in the thread. See if anything shows up that you don't recognise.

just to add to Mr P's post above you may need to make folders and file un-hidden as well in a folder or the root of the HD click Tools > Folder Options > View and pop a tick in Show hidden files and Folders > apply

the search the way Mr P said above or use that app i linked you too.

In addition to Mr P and Halo's posts... When searching, you'll have to click the down arrow that says "Advanced Options", then click "Search Hidden Files and Folders." This will make sure it doesn't ignore them. :)

P.S. You are not legally allowed to use Windows XP since you don't actually own it...
