You should have a recovery partition, have you tried that? Re free copy no, either borrow from a friend or buy one.

    Hi

Sadly their are NO free copies of Windows XP for download, you will need to contact HP for these, a borrowed one may help but in many cases they are OEM versions and the ones friends may have are either retail or from another OEM, so may not work.

Depending on what you are trying to do, the recovery CDs will do the trick. Why not post back with more information on the problem and see if someone here can help you? I have fixed a computer with only recovery CDs before. I don't know whether it matters which brand of computer or version of operating system you have but recovery CDs can definitely be used sometimes.

I don't see you completing the malware thread? This could be part of your problem.

Then you installed SP3 and had another issue.

As Halo (and others) have said: there is no such thing as a Windows XP download, either paid for or free. Not a legal one anyway. However, a friend of mine was in a similar situation a year or two ago; his HP Media PC was all messed up, the recovery partition wasn't working (it would lock up about halfway through), and he had no recovery CDs. So, we went to the HP web site, did some research on his model, and found that we could order a set of recovery discs. He provided his name and the PC serial number and his credit card number, and 3 days later he had a full set of recovery CDs with XP Media Center Edition and all the drivers and preloaded applications. The total cost was under $40US (IIRC it was $38 and some change). I believe he had registered the PC with HP after he bought it and that may have helped, but I'm not 100% sure that he did indeed register. In your situation, this is definitely worth spend 10 minutes online. Even if you never use 'em, I strongly recommend that everyone try to get recovery media for their PCs...

If you clarify and post the exact error maybe someone can help, are you getting a blue screen? Think you're back to XP-SP2 now? .

HP is good at making CDs for your model number computer available for purchase. I have purchased CDs from HP twice and was happy with what I received.
