need cpu upgrade help

I have an older computer that needs an upgrade from its pentium 3 450 mhz cpu. I have found an 800mhz (slot 1 secc2) dirt cheap. I wondered if this is the right one or if I could go to a faster one. I've been looking around the web & noticed that mine is a slot 1 & the newer ones are socket 775. Not sure if I could use those. Any suggestions on upgrading this one will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

 

It depends on what the motherboard supports.

Go to the manufacturer's site and check suitability.

If you are unsure of your hardware, use EVEREST.


There are adapters available to change a slot 1 to socket 370, but it's not really worth the cost.

 

Thanks for the info...it really helped. Seems motherboard only supports up to 600mhz. Another question if ya'll don't mind. I got an hp e-vectra pc from work that has a celeron 700 mhz cpu, motherboard is a whitney i810e (made by intel)...package type-370 pin fc-pga. Am having a hard time trying to find info on it. Would it harm anything in pc if I tried running that board in my older pc? Assuming of course it fits. I have ran everest on both pcs if any other info is needed.

 

It shouldn't be a problem swapping motherboards.
