Need dns from road runner to manually set up my router and was told they don't use it

So I called time warner of rochester ny to get dns server address. I was told that they use DHCP and wouldn't give me any dns server addresses. I wanted to configure my network connection so I could run a game server for my friends. I thought all connections needed a dns server address to go through.

if you want to plug directly into your cable modem and run an ipconfig/all you should be able to get it that way.

if youre just trying to host a game server online, you dont really need to use DNS. if your friends know your public ip, they can just connect that way.

DNS doesnt really have anything to do with connections. All DNS does is translate IP to host name so you can type www.majorgeeks.com and get here instead of 74.86.201.220 to be very basic and brief about it.

I connect through a router and need to give my computer a specific IP address unstead of going through dhcp. In order to do that I have to input thbe dns that my cable modem uses (I'm going by the instruction the router gives). That's so I can forward ports instead of using the DMZ approach and turning off the firewall in the router and I really don't want to do that.
