Need external HDD case help.

I need some guidance. I'm considering hooking up an external HDD case containing a 3.5” desktop HD to a Dell laptop Latitude D4310. This laptop features USB2.0 and external PCI slot. No firewire. I've purchased a IDE to SATA converter adapter so I can use the HDD in a new desktower build.
My issue is I don't know what kind of connection to buy for connecting to the HDD, native IDE or converted SATA, and based on that which type of connector to look for to connect to the laptop, given what's available.
I'm lost and could use some guidance.

USB lead comes with external case, normally- you can onnect this to a desktop or laptop, with a usb lead.
If you want to use the external hard drive as an internal one on a desktop, then it depends on the desktop- if its using a sata motherboard, then it will connect (without the case) with the ide tos ata attachment, and a sata cable- Some sata motheboards have one IDE connector cable connector , and it can be used on an IDE cable to that
if the desktop is an older mottherboard, and has IDE connections, it will connect with an ide cable.
If using as an extra storge for the desktop, it can stay in the external caddy, and use the usb cable.
There are further uses, but I think this might be the information you were after..

Sorry if I was impolite on my last reply to the mobo thread.
My need for the data is to carry on the bizness of household management (hard to believe a computer became so necessary to life.
I will be using it exclusively with the laptop and will later tx all data to one of the new internal HDD on the new system build.
