I am new to the home networking and need some help

I am trying to set up a network to share files and printers between a desktop and laptop. Both are running xp the desktop has home and laptop has pro. I am using a linksys wrt54g router and the coresponding linksys network card on the laptop. I have tried to use the network setup wizard numerous times but each time i do it and go to network places neither machine can see the other. It says i am logged onto the network under network id on both machines. I can see the network in explorer but when i click on it i get an error message saying i dont have access to it. I have gone as far as to uninstall my zone alram thinking that might be the issue but still same problems. I have also turned off the xp built in firewall but still nothing. Both machines can access the internet though. Also I am logged on to both machines as administrator. Only other thing I can think of is i have norton system works running but their firewall is not part of it. Plz help !!!!

also jus wanted to mention that the laptop had been running 98 and the network was working ok could share files and printers. When i upgraded to to xp about 2 weeks ago was when the probs started to occur. I thougt it would be easy to reestablish the network when i upgraded. I musta done something very wrong in the process. :(

It works the other way to i can put files into the shared docs on the laptop and view them from the dektop no problem

I have the very same problem you have - in my case one winxp desktop and one winxp laptop connected through a linksys router. Sometimes the link is established for files and printers, then unexpectedly dropped. I turned off all windows firewalls. Confirmed router IP addressing, workgroup name, computer names, etc. Someone out there must have the answer.

Can the computers ping each other by name and IP?

Also, this could very possibly be your problem:

    Node Type . . . . . . . . . . . . : Unknown
    Node Type . . . . . . . . . . . . : Hybrid

The nodes must be the same. The Unknown Node may not actually be Hybrid.

I could ping IP addresses by not name. The desktop Note Type is Hybrid. The laptop note type is peer-to-peer. How do I change these and to what?

Both must be hybrid, or peer to peer.

    Preferably hybrid.

You can change it in the registry.

    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;314053

So for hybrid you would set the nodetype key to 8, and then reboot. If the value doesnt exist, you must create it.

    The full path is:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\NetBT\Parameters

Sorry I took so long to reply jus got back from vacation. I went to the registry key and here is a shot of what it is reading. Now this is from the PC that is marked as hybrid in the ipconfig. Do I need to change something on the laptop ?

I assume the key your speaking of is the dhcp node type ? If that says 8 than does that mean it is the correct setting ? I am still haivng the same problem sighhhhh I can access the shared files folder on both computers but cannot access the pc from the laptop or add a printer to the laptop from the pc wahhhhhh :) Plzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz Helpppppppp , driving vinni nutso heehee
