Need help getting 8600gts to Work

So I just bought a MSI 8600gts Diamond Plus, when I hook it up to my comp with DVI-D cord, the monitor says to check the video cord. What should I do? Btw, nothing shows up on the screen

 

does it work with a vga cord and adapter? otherwise try a dif cord. Make sure monitor is set on right input. Maybe try other port on vid card.

 

I already tried with the adapter and I still get nothing. How do I make sure I have the right input, and how do I try another port? I think my computer only has 1 port for a video card.

 

there may be a "source select" feature on you monitor if it has multiple input ports.

If I were you, i hook up to the regular mobo video, install the drivers/software for the vid card, then try it again.

 

Some motherboards (more so on some of the more recent boards) require you to set the video out in the BIOS to PCIEx, otherwise the video will go to the on board video. So- remove the video card (with the PC unplugged!) and plug your monitor into the on-board video. Power up the PC and enter the BIOS (it's usually by pressing F1 or F2 or Del). Look around in the BIOS for a setting that says something similar to "Init VGA BIOS" or "Init Video" or maybe "Primary Video Adapter" and the choices would be "On Chip VGA" and "PCIex" and "PCI" or settings very, very close to that. You'd select "PCIex" and save your changes and exit. Shut down the PC, unplug the power cord, and put the video card back in, and plug your monitor into the video card (not the on board video). Power up, and all should be well. You will need to install drivers, but you'll do that with the CD that came with the card, and you'll do it after Windows loads up.
