Here is my issue. I have reformatted my old Dell Inspiron 5100 because the ethernet connection (possible port problem?) no longer worked. Geek Squad said it may be due to some virus' on the computer. So I bought another computer and thought I would just reformat the old computer to try to localize what the problem really is, if it isn't the virus' causing the problem.

Computer is now reformatted and I have installed the broadcom 440x 10/100 integrated controller driver for the local area connection. Settings are to obtain IP and DNS server addresses automatically.

Device manager shows all drivers working properly, but does have a yellow question mark next to PCI modem. (Not sure if having this would help the situation) But when I tried to install a PCI modem that was for my computer off the dell driver website, the installation failed.

    IPCONFIG /all shows:
    Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600]
    (C) Copyright 1985-2001 Microsoft Corp.
