First step: Is the volume on?
Double click the audio icon in the task bar to get to the Master Volume controller and check ALL settings.
Second step: Is the Windows Audio service running?
    Go to Control Panel>Administrative Tools>Services
Scroll down the list of services until you find Windows Audio
Open up Windows Audio by double clicking
Make sure it is running, if not, click on Start.
If the first 2 steps didn't fix the problem.
Third step: Check to see if your Sound Device drivers are OK. Use Device Manager:
To open Device Manager: Start>Control Panel> System. On the Hardware tab, click Device Manager, then click the plus sign in front of Sound, Video, Game Controllers.
In Device Manager, if there is a ? in front of your audio device, that means no audio driver is installed.
A ! means driver installation attempted but with problems.

Let us know what you find.

Being a Gateway you should have got a recovery disc or have a recovery partition already setup. Do you have either? If you have either one you should be able to load the drivers from there.

If you have a recovery partition, you should be able to recover your drivers this way:
Uninstall the driver you just installed.
Go to Start>All Programs>System Recovery, and click Application and Driver Recovery.
If Application and Driver Recovery is not listed, go to Start>Run. Then type (copy and paste would be better): C:\Windows\Sminst\install_app.exe
    and then click OK.
In the Application Recovery Program select the correct option. (Look for the Audio driver)
If it doesn't install properly, uninstall it, find your chipset driver (same way) and install it then the audio driver again.

If this doesn't work, download Everest and post the report from it as an attachment.
