Hi I am ready to install w2k pro and have a few questions .
    1. My hard drive is protitioned c/ and d/ . I am doing a full install . Do I have to clear my hard drive and repartion it? If so how?
    2. Do I need a boot disc for w2k and where would I find it?
    Thanks for any help.

Why repartition? 2K will install on C: and you can use D: for storing mp3s or whatever. If you should have to reinstall 2K your D will remain untouched.

If your Win2k disc is bootable (some are, some aren't), put it in the cd tray and reboot. It will give you the option to delete/create partitions and to format the drive.

If you've made the four bootdisks the put disc one in the drive and reboot. It will copy files and prompt for the next disc until disc four completes. It will give you the same options as the cd will in reference to your drives and partitions.

    Sluggish how?

All NT-bases kernels boot slow, but they run much smoother.

You might have better luck if you format your system drive as NTFS rather than FAT32. That would, of course, require another install.

Thanks I'll try that . I've been running 12 hours now and no conflicks, no lockups. I downloaded msconfig 2k and this helped some.

Remember to install the chipset drivers for your motherboard (Via 4in1, Intel Accelerator, etc.)

All hardware devices needs a driver to allow the operating system to communicate with it.
Usually the standard drivers coming with the standard install of Windows gives a very limited performance. (Like you have to install the Nvidia drivers for your Geforce2 to get access to high DirectX and OpenGL performance)
The motherboard drivers are probably the most important as they controls all traffic in the computer.
You need to find out what type of motherboard you have to determine what drivers to install. Since you are using Ahtlon then you are either using VIA, AMD or SIS chipset.

    1. Look in the booklet which came with your Compaq maybe it tell ya, or else try to go to Compaq support web-site and find the technical details for your computer.

    2. Use some hardware diagnostic tool like aida.

I installed SP3 when I had Win2kPro and had a few minor problems. The one thing I found that was slowing me down were the HotFixes. There was a thread about this about a month or so back. I installed it and it slowed my system down very noticably, so I uninstalled it. My ultimate decision to uninstall SP3 was due to space on my hard drive.

the slow down for the hotfix was for XP only.

Service packs , like most patches, tend to slow programs down. They're there to fix errors, not increase performance.

However, I've made a practice of making bootable, slipstreamed copies of Win2K ith service packs. This means when I install 2K now, SP3 is already installed. I don't have anywhere near the problems I used to with slowdown.

The only odd thing, is that I can installl just fine to my RAID array with the basic Win2K pro install, but it doesn't work with my SP3 slipstreamed version. Odd, yes? Hm. Maybe I should've unplugged my other HDD. I seem to remember having to do that before Win2K would find my RAID.
