    Hi guys,

I've been backing up my downloads with the same names of folders and files when my laptop's hard drive becomes almost full. I put the media in an external hard drive by copying over. So I copy over the folder names and files, then I would erase the files in the folders on my laptop to free up space.. So the folders are technically still there.. when I download things from the net again, the new files go to the same folders again on my laptop. Therefore once laptop HD is full again, I have to copy over, merge folders and etc.. The problem is I have to manually go through every file in the folders to erase in order to free up space on my laptop. Is there like a software program where I can highlight all the folders (with files in them) and then just erase all the files WITHOUT erasing the folders? I hope I make sense.

Any help looking for a software that helps wipe files in folders quickly would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks!!

I don't understand why you have folders in the download folder on your C drive.

Maybe you are looking to change the download location for your files (change the directory to your external hard drive)?

Folders are directories......when you copy over to external USB, you should copy the whole folder as listed (with all its contents), enabling you to delete accordingly from the laptops HDD.
As you create new data, new folders (directories) are created and the process repeats.

The key here, is that you create a filing system you can transverse to easily find data, on the external drive your backing up to itself.
Once you have copied across USB, take it offline and store safely.

Open explorer and in the search for the file types and delete them. Windows will search in subfolders.
CTRL -A (select all) and hold Shift and hit Del to bypass the recycle bin.
Files will be gone (as long as you got all the file types) and the folders will still be there.

I open a folder. If I wish to erase (I erase rather than delete files) multiple files, I hold down the control key and select the files I wish to erase.

I've used the eraser program https://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/eraser.html
for decades. It is one of the first programs I install on any new computer.
I generally select the Schneier 7 pass. I suppose it is named after Bruce Schneier https://www.schneier.com/ a well-know security expert.

If you are really paranoid, you can use the 35 pass one. Note, depending on the number of files and the passes chosen, it will take a long time.
I sometimes use 1 or 3 passes if the files aren't important.
