    I was given these instructions in another section of this forum:

    # Use another PC to make a special CD which you can boot from to try and run virus and spyware scans or to at least backup data. CDs like the below:

    * http://www.free-av.com/en/tools/12/avira_antivir_rescue_system.html
    * UBCD4Win
    * http://www.sysresccd.org/Main_Page
    * http://trinityhome.org/Home/index.php?wpid=1&front_id=12

    # reinstall

    I don't know what type of CDs to use, how to put the programs on the CD, or which program to use to put them on the CD..
    Can I buy the CDs at walmart?

    Hi.

    You should be able to use a CD-R or CD-RW and yes you would be able to get it at Walmart. :)

    I always thought those were for Music files? What program would I use to do it..

    CDs are for whatever you choose to put on em, the music industry uses em cause they're convenient and cheap. if you use UBCD4Win, it will write the disc for you, just insert the disc when it asks and follow the prompts. if you need help with the UBCD program post again and i'll try to step you through it.

    best of luck!!

    Okay, to start go to this address http://www.free-av.com/en/tools/12/avira_antivir_rescue_system.html and click the red download button, then in the dialog box that opens asking what you want to do with the file click 'save' and choose a location you can remember easily, like desktop.

    Next, insert a blank CD and close any dialog boxes that open up, then double click the file you just downloaded (its the red umbrella thingy). If you have more than one CD burner, you'll have to tell it which one to use and click burn CD. The entire process took about 25 seconds on my laptop (which is kinda low-end) so it shouldn't take very long at all.

    Third: go back to the thread or forum where they asked you to do this and follow directions. Hope this helps and best of Luck!!!

    Okay so I did the UBCD and it made the CD just fine and everything and it brings up the program on my computer, and Ive been scanning and deleting things. but my computer STILL wont start completely. it's doing the same thing. I tried to choose the option where it says Boot from C: and it did nothing, just a black screen. I tried doing the windows recovery from the CD and it said it couldn't do it because of the EULA or something? Some type of agreement. I'm guessing my computer is fried.. :/

    Your computer isn't "fried". But since you never told us exactly what your problems are, we can't offer any pointed advice on how to get your PC up and running again. If you boot to the UBCD4Win, you should be able to access your data to back up the stuff you want saved. You'll need a 2nd partition or 2nd hard drive (internal or external), or if the PC has two CD/DVD drives, you can boot to the UBCD4Win in one drive, then use the other to burn your data to CD/DVD for back up. Once your data is safe, you can use your Windows install CD to format the hard drive and re-install clean. If this isn't an option for whatever reason, please start a new thread (reference this thread) and completely and clearly describe the problems your having. Include what happened at first, any steps you've done already to try to fix it, and where it stands now. Then we'll do our best to get you up and running.

    Help with computer (cont)

    Okay, I'm making a new thread, in reference to this thread http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=212835&highlight=need+help+making+a+boot

    I don't know what exactly was wrong with my computer but I have a pretty good Idea. I installed Spybot because my computer was going pretty slow, and it did that thing where it asks to change something in the registry, I made the mistake of pushing yes, instead of no, then I found out it was the win32.zbot afterwards and some other windows named things, and it was too late then. I couldn't get it to fully come on anymore. Before it was just coming on to the black windows XP screen where the bar goes back and forth. Now it wont even go that far. It goes to this black screen that says Verifying DMI Pool Data........
    And it never goes any farther than that. I don't have any windows disk so I can't do that, I wish I did though.
    My desktop is an acer, and my dad has an acer laptop, that has a restore disk. Would that help me at all? Or would it screw my computer up?

    No reason to begin a new thread. Merged as there is nothing in a new post that can't be pursued in this thread.

    Oh okay, sorry.
    Did I explain the problem clearly enough?

    Even though the brand is the same, you can not use a restore disk for an Acer laptop on your Acer desktop - the hardware is not the same.
    Each restore disk is tied to a certain model computer, not brand of computer.

    You need to contact Acer or check your documentation to see what restore options are available for your desktop.
    You might have a restore partition or you might be able to purchase restore disks from Acer for your desktop.

    How would I go about checking it if I can't get on it? If I got a restore disk would it help ?

    try turning on the comp and repeatedly hitting the f8 key. this should bring up the safe mode menu, which will give you a few options to boot into. if it works, choose safe mode or safe mode with networking and go from there backing up to disk. don't give up, and best of luck!!

    Tried that just now a few times, and sadly, it doesn't bring up anything.. :( When I would turn the computer on before, it would automatically go to a screen that brought me to options to turn it on through safe mode, but it never worked. But now it just automatically goes to a screen that says verifying DMI pool data... and thats it.

    motc7: lmao! but back to work, Lisasauce, you may be at the nuke and pave stage. are you comfortable going into the case of your comp? and do you have another working tower you can go into? best bet might be to yank your harddisk and slave it into another PC to back up data, then reinstall.

    what that does is it makes a computer that doesn't have CD drive drivers capable of running a disc- in short no. your computer can already run CDs. Do all of your computers use XP? both towers and your dads

  23. Lisasauce

    Lisasauce Private E-2

    Yes they all use XP but my dads is a laptop.

    I'll repeat what I said on page 1.
    You might have a restore partition or you might be able to purchase restore disks from Acer for your desktop.
    Since you don't seem to have a restore partition then the next thing to do is contact Acer to see if you can purchase a restore cd for you Acer desktop.

    Don't waste your time looking for boot floppies. Your desktop is capable of booting from the CD drive. What you are lacking is the XP install disk or the restore disk for your computer.

    Okay I have a windows xp install cd from my sister, that should work right?

    yeah it should, just be ready to type in the product key for your PC, should be on a bright green and white sticker on the case some where. if you use that disc without backing up first you may lose your data.

    Is it a Microsoft XP disk? If not, there is no guarantee that will work because some disks are tied to certain brands of computers.
    If it is a genuine MS disk and doesn't have a brand on it like Dell or HP, then you can repair your XP install using the MS disk.
