i have 2 computers side by side...one has a usb ethernet adapter. both have 10/100/1000 gigabit cards in them, can i network them together to run the net on my new one too? or do i need to buy an adapter?

Just a Cat-6 cross over cable is needed, then set one up to be the ICS host, and the other to be the ICS slave. even easier with a Router.

    There is No CAT6 crossover.

The crossover function is embedded in all giga cards.
