need help optimizing cable internet connection

    i just switched from dsl to cable yesterday and so far my ping times have been horrible on Dan Elwell's Broadband Speed Test but the download rates are fine i have tried a few different programs but nothing i do has any effect on the ping times what else should i try or am i just making everything worse
