hi. I currently have Windows XP home edition. I have 2 problems if someone can help.
The problem is that i can't logon into any of my accounts: ie when i try to log on as Administrator/User it says "Logging on" and right after loggs me off.
I have tried to enter using safe mode with the various options but it still will not let me log on. There were 2 similar posts on people with this problem. Any solutions?

Since i couldn't log on I was thinking about reformating my computer or reinstalling Windows. I have the windows xp hedition Cd(recovery cd) which came with the computer. I have read the thread on formatting the computer.
I have changed my bios to load from cd first but nothing happens. I have a windows startup disk but when i try to change drives ie: a:\ e: it does not change into that drive.
How would i be able to access the cd through dos? or access the cd at all?

    please help.
    Thanks in advance.
    peaceman.

this is very strange im on sophos av list of new trojan/viruses and have heard no reports of any doing this but seeing as though a couple of you now have this problem there must be something going around, have you installed sp2 yet could it be something to do with loading this
anyway if its possible start in safe mode and run your antivirus software ,make sure you have it up to date ,if you cant start in safe mode with command prompt and type the path to your av software ,it might also be worth downloading stinger and running that straight from safe mode as many new trojans (w32agobot) and others turn off antivirus programs on infected computers.
as for formatting this is a last resort at the mo

ok. i figured out how to reinstall windows which i did.
but now a new worry comes up.

Files from my other accounts before the reinstall
C:\Documents and Settings\(user/adminstratoretc) are still there.
Im assuming that whatever cause this may still be in my computer.
If i just delete the folders will it be ok? And is it most likely safe not to touch those.

am i to assume that my computer is clean at the moment after reinstalling windows?

    thanks a bunch

i would make sure all av is up to date and run a system scan with system restore turned off
when youve run the recovery disk it has reinstalled the missing files it wont remove any
i would then run in this order
    DISK CLEANUP
    ADAWARE
    SPYBOT S&D
    CRAPCLEANER

    sorry
should have put a bit more of an explaination
    heres a link
    http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4191.html

if it was a trojan/virus that cused this it would have left instrutions to run at machine start up in the registry the links to these should be disabled by running the tools i mentioned but they will remain there
as for removing them i would run hijack this after reading this first

it sounds as if peaceman has used the xp recovery disk to install the files that are missing/changed by whatever caused it ? if you have your disk i think this would be the better option at the mo .
ive been thinking about this and ive noticed that when i log onto my account in xp a message now prompts up notifiying me that it locating my settings file this didnt used to come up and im thinking that a recent msupdate has incorparated this in .ill check knowledge base
are all your patches up to date, did you notice this before
im tending to sway with a sotware prob more than virus as still havent read about any doing this

I didn't get any messages about settings or a settings file before it happened to me. Also, it happened to me the next time I logged on to my PC after installing Ad-aware and the exact same thing seems to have happened to uofmjock2. Coincidence?

PS: a had installed Ad-aware, used it and taken it off, before and everything was fine so maybe it is not this

hey UJ..read on the FAQ section of this forum " Formatting computer."

heres what i did. i restarted my comp. pressed f1 until the help menu came up. In the help menu there are a list.. went to BIOS -> then Boot sequence
there you can change how the computer boots up. put the CD drive in first and hardrive last. restarted my computer. (you should have the windows xp in the drive that you put first in boot sequence)

This didnt work for me.Restarted my comp several times but still no response.
I then tried f10 when the comp was starting my comp and a menu came up asking which drive i wanted to load. one option was from CD which i selected.
THen on the screen it said press any button to go to CD. which i did.
After the WIndows CD loads theres options and you just hav eto follow accordingly to what you want.

    hope this helps.

i think i also ran anti stuff earlier that day. Everything seemed to be fine.

my mate's dad has his own small computer business so borrowing a disk isn't going to be a problem for me but should i ask him to lend me the windows xp h. ed disk or is there a recovery disk that can be used for all PCs with XP h. ed. Was your recovery disk specific to your Pc?

I use Windows XP Home Edition also and am still unable to log into it and it when I tried running the recovery disk it was telling me that it did not recognize a hard disk drive on my computer, so what I did was take my motherboard cd and put it in my computer and searched for Makedisk.exe and this will format you a recovery Floppy Disk. After this was made, I restarted the computer holding F8 and it asked if i wanted to make a third party SCSI or w/e press F6, so I did that and inserted the Floppy Disk, then it asked me what controller I wanted to use during process (but there was only one option for me). So i chose it then it sent me to Install Windows XP, or repair Windows XP screen again. And this time i was allowed to Reinstall or Repair Windows XP because it was recognizing my Hard Drive again. The reason was because the new SP 2.0 was trying to block out the WinXP partition. At this point im trying to find out if there is a command to use in DOS to remove WinXP SP 2.0 without having to reinstall WinXP or just spend 2hrs reinstalling all my drivers. Hope this helps in anyway and good luck.

just get the windows home or pro edition CD(whichever you have). i think regular version or recovery should be fine. I think if you buy windows XP cd its the same as the recovery windows cd that came with my computer.(mines just happen to say recoveryon it) ask your mates dad , he should know.
