my computer recently got majorly screwed, tho that isnt the issue anymore, what is however is that i am unable to reinstall windows because it keeps saying that i have antivirus protection on the boot record, which doesnt sound possible since the drive itself was formated, this is what it calls it in the setuplog "fscmosavcheck" i really need to know how to disable or get around this

    Please help!
    thanx!

We need more details OS etc. Help us to help you

In the meantime here's some brute force methods you could try
Look on the mobo for the Clear CMOS jumper, then use it to do so

If you can't find it, take the battery out for a couple of mins & replace.

    There are more brutal methods
    boot off floppy
    A:.fdisk /mbr

    reboot off floppy, repartition, reformat.

    :D

    BTW welcome;)

Enter bios and find and untick "boot sector virus protection" or similar wording.

i was using win 98se(hardcore 98se beliver) but what happened was one day i just up and turned my computer on and most of my system files were gone so i opted to rewrite windows, but the ativirus thing stopped me( whewn i try to run setup it just comes up with a window saying it catn write to the bootsecor because of antivirus protection) so as an idiot i opted to format the drive hoping it would just let me reinstall windows, but nope it still says it and like i said in the setuplog it says fscmosavcheck and then some other erros inbetween butr all seem to be related too it, i was thinking to pop the batter out too but i was hoping for another solution could persent itself, if anyone has nay other tips id love to hear em but im only at my friends place so i wont be here too long

    Thanks everyone!

Have you tried Halo's tip? If not do so. If it still doesn't work, post back and we'll see what we can come up with

Oops, passed you on the way:D ;)

OK, do you wanna try brute force?

is related to CMOS Virus checking.......

one thing I must ask is are you installing over the top of a previous Windows OS or installing from a clean HD?

IF the over previous OS then do you have AV software running? if so disable it.

well sadly none of that worked, the fdisk /mbr just returns a cannot acess boot sector error, and pulling the bios battery restet all my settings but didnt get rid of the av cheak

    and its a formated HDD

i quite honestly am at a loss, sadly its starting to look more and more like im gonna need to buy a new computer which i cant afford....sigh

Ok you have Fdisk on floppy?

then next step I would take is to delete the partition effectively blanking the drive then re-create a partition then re-format..........

    Fdisk's many functions explained http://fdisk.radified.com/

It is a setting in the BIOS to protect against viruses that change the boot record and majorly screw your computer. It doesn't matter if the the hard drive is formatted or not. the CMOS needs to be cleared. If there isn't a setting in the CMOS to disable boot sector virus protection (I doubt it isn't there), then you have to open the computer and clear the CMOS via jumpers. Find the jumper to reset the cmos and it should let you do your work.

well like i said there is no bios option for this, nor are there any jumpers to clear the cmos so i tried pulling the battery which cleared the bios settijngs but did nothin about the av check, trust me im far from computer bilitirate, i went to school for this shit, if i had another comp i might be able to install windows through it and move the hard drive but sadly i dont, honestly i think this is some osrt of data seepage into the mobo, ive tried everythind and nothing seems to wokr, itts frustraiting to the point that my computer is heading for a close encounter of the wall kind

    Hi,

I'm not sure what you mean by data seepage, but if there's no boot sector protection enable/disable in the BIOS setup, and you've disconnected the CMOS battery, let the CMOS discharge and you still can't write to the hard drive's boot sector, then something is getting loaded into memory from whatever boot device you're using that is preventing access to the boot sector... if you're booting from a diskette, have you tried pressing F8 (I think it's F8) before the OS loads from it to get the boot menu, then select the option to bypass everyting and go to a plain prompt?

What *are* you booting from, btw? I read through the previous posts, but don't see any indication (maybe I missed it).

Well, since I live by rules of thumb when it comes to fixing computers, here's one for that I follow religiously, and it has saved many a computer from the same fate :): Never work on a computer when frustrated. Stop, leave the room and take a break until the frustration dies down. Then, *before* going back to tackle the problem again, review everything you've done to date and try to think of other possibilities beyond those that you've tried that haven't worked.

That said, another thing you don't mention is what kind of computer it is. Please post that too - it could be helpful to those here that are trying to help.

    Regards,

    dj
