Ugh...I've done my best trying to prepare this properly for posting.

My computer is slow and crashing like crazy.

    I've attached a HijackThis logfile.

And here is the report of my computer specifications:

Edit by chaslang: Everest log attached

    Can someone help me?

    Welcome to Majorgeeks!

Please do not post any logs inline. Always attach them.

Please follow our standard cleaning procedures which are necessary for us to provide you support. Also there are steps included for installing, running, and posting HijackThis logs as attachments but they must only be attached after running all of the standard cleaning steps.

You have a Virtumonde infection! So while running the READ & RUN ME, make sure you click on the Special Removal Procedures link and follow the steps for the Virtumonde link (attach the request log later).

    - Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ & RUN ME FIRST Before Asking for Support

Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.

    - Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.

After doing ALL of the above you still have a problem make sure you have booted to normal mode and run the steps in the below link to properly use HijackThis and attach a log:

    Downloading, Installing, and Running HijackThis

When you return to make your next post, make sure you attach the following logs and that you have run these scans in the following order too (these scans are covered in steps 6 & 7 of the READ & RUN ME sticky)
    • Bitdefender
    • Panda Scan
    • HijackThis

    .

I guess I should have been more clear but I've run everythiing I was supposed to run before posting the logfile. Problem is that when the Spyware cleaners get to that .dll file the computer crashes.

Please read step 6 again! There are two required logs that must be posted before posting a HijackThis log. What DLL file are you referring too?

I also do not see MS Windows Defender installed? Are you sure you ran everything? Also no Spybot!!!

You also should have read the Special Removal Procedures link in the READ ME. It mentions Virtumonde aka Winfixer which is what you have. Run the below and attach the log:

    Virtumonde aka Trojan Vundo Removal

I have been trying to install the Windows Defender but it says I need the XP Service Pack 2. I think the guy who built this computer for me used his Windows and that makes it so I cannot receive updates. That's probably the majopr problem I am facing right now.

I have and ran Spyboit though each time I start it everything shuts down.

I've been working on trying to run the two scans you said i needed to run first. Panda and Bitdefender.

I ran Panda scan 6 times and finally it got all the way through without crashing. I've attached the log.

I also tried again to run Bitdefender but It crashes the computer halfway through scanning each time.

I've attached the log I have from Panda and will now work on the Virtumonde link as suggested.

After running VundoFix attach the log from it.

Then also attach a new HijackThis log.

Ok...I think I got rid of the problem....I hope so anyway!

The VundoFix removed a bunch of infected files and now when it runs everything is clean.

I've attached a new HijackThis report.

No, I didn't forget. I thought I saved it to a file but cannot find it now.

Make sure viewing of hidden files is enabled (per the tutorial).

Run HijackThis and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    O20 - Winlogon Notify: psiis - C:\DOCUME~1\kristina\LOCALS~1\Temp\siisp.dat (file missing)
    O20 - Winlogon Notify: xxwxy - xxwxy.dll (file missing)

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.
Boot into safe mode and use Windows Explorer to delete
    :
    C:\Documents and Settings\kristina\Local Settings\Temp\siisp.dat
    C:\Documents and Settings\kristina\Local Settings\Temp\_AZTMP6_\backups\backup-20060306-210401-956.dll
    C:\Documents and Settings\kristina\Local Settings\Temp\_AZTMP6_\backups\backup-20060306-210834-636.dll
    C:\Documents and Settings\~Julia~\Local Settings\Temp\clientax.inf
    C:\Documents and Settings\~Julia~\Local Settings\Temp\ZangoAX.cab[clientax.inf]
    C:\WINDOWS\pss\Reboot.exeStartup
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\ddcab.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\iiijh.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\xxwxy.dll

If you get an error when deleting a file. Right click on the file and check to see if the read only attribute is checked. If it is, uncheck it and try again. Other wise open Task Manager and kill the process if running then delete the file.

    Additional step to delete WinadX.inf:
    - Click Start, Run, and enter cmd in the box and click OK. This opens a command prompt windows.
    - Enter the following command lines each followed by the enter key
    cd C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\
    attrib -r -h -s WinadX.inf
    del WinadX.inf
    exit

Now if running Win XP goto c:\windows\Prefetch and delete all files in this folder.
Now run Ccleaner (installed while running the READ ME FIRST)
    .

Make sure you tell me how things are working now.

Reminder Note: Once we have determined you are malware free you will need to disable System Restore, reboot, and re-enable system restore per step 1 of the READ & RUN ME. This only applies to if using WinXP or WinMe.

Okay, I've done everything your last post said to do. Should I disable System Restore at this point?

  13. chaslang

chaslang MajorGeeks Admin - Master Malware Expert Staff Member

First I needed an answer to what I asked:
If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to go back to step 1 of the READ & RUN ME to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points. Then reboot and enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.

After that, you should work thru the below link:

How to Protect yourself from malware!

    ThisGirlRox Private E-2

Well things seem to be working fine from what I can tell right now. Yes, they seem better and quicker.

  15. ThisGirlRox

    ThisGirlRox Private E-2

Okay I did the System restore steps.

I also ran HJT again and attached a logfile. Could you check and see if it looks okay now?

You now have three antivirus applications installed. Since you just installed AVG, I wll assume you do not want Panda (and I do not mean Panda Active Scan which is just the online tool) and Symantec (or Norton). Thus first goto Add/Remove programs and look for them and uninstall them. Then continue with the below steps. If the uninstalls work properly, some items below may no longer be found. That's okay, just continue.

Click on Start, then Run ... type services.msc into the box that opens up, and press 'OK'. On the page that opens, scroll down to Symantec Network Drivers Service (or if not found look for the short name: SNDSrvc) ... then right click the entry, select 'Properties' and press 'Stop Service'. When it shows that it is stopped, next please set the 'Start-up Type' to 'Disabled'. Press 'OK' until you get back to Windows.

Now repeat the above for the below two services:
SymWMI Service (or if not found look for the short name: SymWSC)
Panda Process Protection Service (or if not found look for the short name: PavPrSrv)

Next, run HJT, but instead of scanning, click on the "None of the above, just start the program" button at the bottom of the choices. At the lower right, click on the 'Config" button, and then the Misc tools' button ... select 'Delete an NT Service" ... copy/paste the following into the box that opens, and press "OK":

    SNDSrvc

Now repeat the above HJT step fo the below two services:
    SymWSC
    PavPrSrv

If you get an error message from HJT, just ignore it and continue with all steps.

Now exit HJT but do not reboot when it tells you it needs to. We will do that further down after running HJT again to fix some other items.

Run HijackThis and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    O3 - Toolbar: Norton AntiVirus - {42CDD1BF-3FFB-4238-8AD1-7859DF00B1D6} - C:\Program Files\Norton Internet Security\Norton AntiVirus\NavShExt.dll (file missing)

    O23 - Service: SymWMI Service (SymWSC) - Symantec Corporation - C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\Security Center\SymWSC.exe

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.
Boot into safe mode and use Windows Explorer to delete:
C:\Program Files\Norton Internet Security <-- the whole folder
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared <-- the whole folder
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\Panda Software <-- the whole folder

If you get an error when deleting a file. Right click on the file and check to see if the read only attribute is checked. If it is, uncheck it and try again. Other wise open Task Manager and kill the process if running then delete the file.

Now reboot in normal mode and post a new HJT log.

I was good until I followed the steps in the Protect yourself from Malware. I downloaded CCleaner (which I couldnt download before) and AVG and a free fire wall. No the comp is stalling and crashing and flickering and running at a snails pace again! :(

  22. chaslang

chaslang MajorGeeks Admin - Master Malware Expert Staff Member

When you install software to protect your PC from malware, it comes at a price. And the price is performance. Without the protection, your PC will be faster. But you will also get infected by malware faster and the end result is that you will spend all of your time fixing malware problems (and some can be really catostophic).

Unless your processor speed is really slow and you have limited memory, it really should not be that bad. It will be slower but not at "snail speed". Are you talking only about when online? Are you on dial-up?

    Are you using AOL????

Why did you install TWO firewalls?

  23. ThisGirlRox

    ThisGirlRox Private E-2

I am not on Dial Up I'm on Cable. The comp is barely working now. It's crashing again every few minutes whether online or not.

I do use AOL but it was running fine before I installed the security features...it was running really fast like when it was brand new.

I didn't realize I had installed 2 Firewalls. I thought AVG was only an antivirus program.

  24. ThisGirlRox

    ThisGirlRox Private E-2

I checked out my version of AVG and it says nothing about having a firewall in it. What two firewalls are you talking about?

I'm posting my latest HiJackThis log in case it might help.

Edited to add: The online HJT analyzer is picking this up as BAD :

Unknown file in Winsock LSP: c:\windows\system32\avgfwafu.dllWinsock Hijacker
Every time I've seen this its been a bad thing
O10 - Unknown file in Winsock LSP: c:\windows\system32\avgfwafu.dllWinsock Hijacker

You mean before you installed AOL's security stuff????
Personally I would get rid of all of their stuff. But if you do disable it (and I would) you need another spyware blocking tool. You do not have any full blockers installed other than AOL which is not very good.

You did not install just AVG antivirus. You installed AVG with Firewall. This is not the free antivirus and you will have to pay for it eventually when a trial runs out.

So either uninstall AVG with Firewall or uninstall ZoneAlarm fireall! Just use AVG antivirus or one of the other free antivirus applications in the How to protect thread.

Don't trust the online analyzers to be perfect. They are far from it. That O10 line is for you AVG Firewall.

You can also have HJT fix the below two lines as they just waste resources and you do not need them to load at startup.
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MSMSGS] "C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe" /background

Also no one uses Messenger anyway and it can be a source of popups.

No, I was talking about the security stuff recomended by you guys. I did uninstall a lot of the extra AOL stuff that I didn't need though.

Ok, I uninstalled the wrong AVG and installed the right one. That made a huge difference. Thank you!

OK, I've deleted those. I've also attached another HJT log. I think everything is running great now. Thanks for all your help. Just let me know if I need to do anything else.

Looks good now! See how much of a difference having two firewalls vs one can make! ;)
