Hi guys! Long time no see!

It's that time again to do a clean install, and I just got Windows 7 pro that I'm trying to install on my MSI GT627 laptop. Went into the bios to change the boot order and everything has parentheses around them. A note to the side says "a device enclosed in parenthesis has been disabled in the corresponding menu". Neither Eric or I could figure out how to remove them. I tried to restore it to the original settings in the BIOS, but that didn't do the job either.

The laptop came with Vista and every time I've done a clean install up until this point, I've used the restore discs that it prompted me to make when I first got it. That's worked fine for me and I've not had any big complaints about Vista (believe it or not) except that my hard drive is partitioned and the C: drive ends up filled up.

Everyone raves about Windows 7 and work offered me a license, so I thought I'd go for it, but I'm stuck. Any suggestions? The only ideas I came up with from my google searching was to clear the CMOS by getting into the motherboard and removing the battery or shorting the jumper. I'd rather not crack the case if I can help it.

    Thanks!

Also try F11 (or F12) during the splash screen and see if you get a boot menu where you can select CDROM as boot device.

@ sach2 - I tried that, I was able to change the boot order, but because they are listed in parentheses, it doesn't respond to my change. That was when I tried to restore the BIOS to its original settings, but that didn't get rid of the parentheses either.

@ Novice - Now THAT looks like my solution. And it looks like this is a common problem with my particular laptop, too. I really didn't want to open it up, but I'm pretty certain my warranty has run out anyway, so I just need to gather my courage and do it. I'm going to have to wait until next weekend at the earliest since I need it in working order this week for work.

I went ahead and used the recovery discs and did the clean install with Vista, got rid of the bloatware, got everything sending to the D: drive. Somehow I'm still left with hardly any space to spare on the C:. I just can't wait to get rid of this partition... *shakes head*. Well, I'll just do my best to make it through this week... Thanks for the advice, I'll let you know how it goes! :)

So, the directions on notebookreview.com were very clear. (As Follows)

so all you have to do to clear the cmos and remove the password prompt in your bios is :

    1) unplujg laptop, remove laptop battery
    2) open the back main cover (voiding the warrenty sticker)
    3) with the laptop oriented with the memory sticks closest to you, unplug the small power lead to the right (and bottom) of the memory sticks
    4) reconnect the power lead, plug in the battery, power on laptop, you should see an message saying CMOS is cleared or something and hit F1 to enter setup. From there you are in th bios and make sure you verify that there is no longer a password setup

I followed them exactly without a problem, but there was no message about the CMOS being cleared and when I entered the BIOS, the boot order is still in parentheses and continues to boot from the Hard Drive.

I'm not sure what they mean about a password setup. As far as I can tell, there is no password, and there never was one.

Anyone have any other ideas? I'm stumped.

Finally got some resolution on this....

    drumroll please....

The Windows 7 disc I had was messed up. It's from work, so they burned me the disc and issued me a key. Never occurred to me that it was a problem with the disc. Our network guy, who is also my wonderful neighbor, took a look at it after seeing me complaining on facebook. So, I guess I learned a lot... and voided any warranty I might have had. Ah well...

    Clean install tonight!!! Woo!!
