I need some help and advice. I am not a computer person. I have an old Gateway 2000 C3P laptop that I screwed up. I sent some information to the real White House some years ago and ended up with some dail up takeover device by some adult web site. I got some on line help to remove the auto dail up thing, but it was dailing up other sites I did not know about. Eventually, someone helped me remove a trojan horse virus or device? I know I sound like an idiot, to the learned among you readers, but way back when, here on the farm ,we used the computer for e-mail and IM for long distance calls because they were free. That is all we needed a computer for.

Anyway, the computer got slower and slower and I sent it up to the high school in hope that the kids might sort out the problem. that didn't work. I eventually handed it off to a guy who is a programmer. He told me that the uninstall device for windows 95 was removed. Who knows by whom or what. He said that he could not reinstall 95 or 98 to dump the damage done by the adult crap until the corrupt 95 program is removed.

Is there a fix for this old girl? Could you replace the hard drive? Or is that just too expensive for old an slow machine? I think this is a software problem since the thing opens the desk top, would it do that if the hard drive was bad? Or is the hard drive only partially screwed up? Any help or advice appreciated. we would like to get this thing to work to do e-mail and play DVD's for the kids when we camp. Thanks Rich

I can't find your model, C3P for any Gateway 2000.
I suspect that the drive in the old notebook is only a CD ROM, which means, you will not be able to use it to play DVDs.

The hard drive is probably fine, hardware wise but not so fine in terms of windows software. I don't think I've run windows 95 for 10 years so any hope of me remembering how to tell you to clean it up is gone.

My advice, look for a refurbed laptop. As an example
for $419.99 you can get this
    http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicat...p?EdpNo=3089874&sku=M975-5144&srkey=M975-5144
which runs XP Pro and has a DVD-ROM drive.
Look at other sites and you might be able to get something a bit cheaper.

I agree with plodr's comments about the computer! I'm worried about your friend that is a programmer. Best that I can remember Win95 never had an uninstall utility. It would let you try to format C: while you were running Windows until it got to the point that the installation was useless ( did this years ago on a work laptop and learned better ) and wind up with an unusable computer.

To remove Win95, provided that you have the media to reinstall it, download this, the Win98SE OEM version, http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm. This will be a self extracting file in the WinImage format and will require that you have a floppy disk to create it on when you click on the executable file.

When you get this far and have questions, please post back! Hope this helps! :)
