I have an 802.11g router, and an 802.11g access point. I also have an 802.11b access point. I would like to turn off the encryption on my 802.11g units to allow me to use my 802.11b. How would I do this. And don't worry, security is not an issue. I live in the middle of nowhere. Thank You.

You would go into the Wireless Security settings page and turn off WEP or WPA from there.

Actually, you can probably just do a "hard reset" on the router, and it will default to no security. With router on, hold in the reset button for about 30 seconds.

This would be helpful, also, what brownizs has stated is helpful also.

This covers both hardware and software.

BTW, wired access is more secure. :p

I have everything set up good between my two 802.11g's, so I don't want to do a "hard reset". The computer connected to the router doesn't have SP2 on it; and I was wondering if anyone had some step by step instrucions to turn of the WPA encryption. Or ever turn it to WEP. Also, after I turn the encryption down or off, would the 802.11g unit that connects to the router have to be reset?

As I stated, you just need to go into the router settings and turn it off in Wireless Security (need to know what models of routers and A/Ps). In the OS, on the Wireless connection, you just need to go into the Advanced settings in Wireless Adapter Properties, and disable.

If you want step by step, then the manufacturer website would spell it out in more depth if you wish.

Wireless Cable/DSL Router has menus and the Wireless security can be disabled by checking or unchecking the security.

However, each Router has its own menu structure I do not know which one you have.

Even if you post the Model might be that No one here is using the same Router.

The solution is to read the Router’s Manual.

As far as the Wireless computer.

If you use the original utilty read the manual.

If you use Windows Zero Configuration click the icon and the properties there is an entry to uncheck and disable the Authentication.

Lost the Manuals? Log to the manufacturer support site and download them.

As far as security is concerned least that you can do is to use MAC filtering (it works with any Wireless standart).

    Wireless - Basic Configuration.

    Wireless Security.

    :)
